Incarnate Word Cardinals Men's Basketball
The Incarnate Word Cardinals men's basketball team represents the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas, United States. They are currently led by fifth-year head coach Carson Cunningham. Beginning in 2013, the Cardinals made the jump to NCAA Division I and joined the Southland Conference. As part of their transition from Division II to Division I, they were not eligible for postseason play until 2018. They play their home games at the McDermott Convocation Center. The University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) is a private, Catholic university with its main campus in San Antonio and Alamo Heights, Texas. Founded in 1881 by the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, the university's main campus is located on . It is the largest Catholic university in Texas. NCAA Division II (D-II) is an intermediate-level division of competition in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). It offers an alternative to both the larger and better-funded Division I and to the scholarship-free environment offered in Division III. The 2002 NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Tournament was the 46th annual single-elimination tournament to determine the national champion of men's NCAA Division II college basketball in the United States. Officially culminating the 2001–02 NCAA Division II men's basketball season, the tournament featured forty-eight teams from around the country. The Elite Eight, national semifinals, and championship returned to the Roberts Municipal Stadium in Evansville, Indiana, the home of the first twenty College Division championships between 1957 and 1976. Metro State (29–6) defeated defending champions Kentucky Wesleyan in the final, 80–72, to win their second Division II national championship and second in three seasons. The 2014–15 Louisiana–Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns men's basketball team represented the University of Louisiana at Lafayette during the 2014–15 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. Southland Conference
The Southland Conference, abbreviated as SLC, is a collegiate athletic conference which operates in the South Central United States (specifically Texas and Louisiana). It participates in the NCAA's Division I for all sports; for football, it participates in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). The Southland sponsors 18 sports, 10 for women and eight for men, and is governed by a presidential Board of Directors and an Advisory Council of athletic and academic administrators. Carson Cunningham (born May 7, 1977) is an American basketball coach and author who is currently an assistant coach for the Army Black Knights men's basketball, Army Black Knights basketball team. He is the former head coach of the Incarnate Word Cardinals men's basketball team. Playing career Cunningham was a standout basketball player at Andrean High School in Merrillville, Indiana, where he was a four-year letterwinner and a three-time first team all-area selection, as well as first team all-state selection and USA Today All-USA high school basketball team, USA Today honorable mention All-American as a senior. Incarnate Word Cardinals
The Incarnate Word Cardinals, also known as UIW Cardinals, are composed of 23 teams representing the University of the Incarnate Word in intercollegiate athletics, including men and women's basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, swimming & diving, tennis, and track and field. Men's sports include baseball and football. Women's sports include softball, synchronized swimming, and volleyball. The Cardinals compete in NCAA Division I and are members of the Southland Conference. UIW has sent multiple fencers to compete in multiple NCAA Fencing Championships (2016 & 2017).
