In Another Country
"In Another Country" is a short story by American author Ernest Hemingway. It was published in Hemingway's 1927 short story collection, ''Men Without Women''. The story deals with WWI soldiers receiving treatment in Italy during the war. Summary The short story is about an ambulance corps member in Milan during World War I. Although unnamed, he is assumed to be Nick Adams, a character Hemingway made to represent himself. He has an injured knee and visits a hospital daily for rehabilitation. Machines are used to speed the healing with the doctors making much of the miraculous new technology. They show pictures to the wounded of injuries like theirs healed by the machines, but the war-hardened soldiers are portrayed as skeptical, perhaps justifiably so. Andre Jules Dubus II (August 11, 1936 – February 24, 1999) was an American short story writer and essayist. Biography Early life and education Andre Jules Dubus II was born in Lake Charles, Louisiana, the youngest child of Katherine (Burke) and André Jules Dubus, a Cajun-Irish Catholic family. His two elder siblings are Kathryn and Beth. James Lee Burke is his first cousin. His surname is pronounced "Duh-BYOOSE", with the accent falling on the second syllable, as in "profuse". Nicholas Adams is a fictional character, the protagonist of two dozen short stories and vignettes written in the 1920s and 1930s by American author Ernest Hemingway. Adams is partly inspired by Hemingway's own experiences, from his summers in Northern Michigan at Ernest Hemingway Cottage, his family cottage to his service in the Red Cross ambulance corps in World War I.
