In Absentia (film)
''In Absentia'', a short film commissioned by the BBC as a part of a series called "Sound on Film International", was a collaboration with the filmmakers The Brothers Quay and composer Karlheinz Stockhausen. Keith Griffiths produced the film with production companies, Illuminations Films and Koninck. Marlene Kaminsky plays the woman in the film. Plot A seated woman, alone in a chair at a table in a room on one of the top floors of an asylum, repeatedly writes on a piece of paper and sharpens pencils. The pencil point often breaks under her fingers' force. She places the broken points outside the window on the sill. A satanic figure is somewhere nearby, animated and made of straw or clay, not flesh. A spotlight lights up her window randomly. She finishes her writing, tears the paper from the pad, folds it, places it in an envelope, and slips it through a slot that contains many more letters. Stephen and Timothy Quay ( ; born June 17, 1947) are American identical twin brothers and stop-motion animators who are better known as the Brothers Quay or Quay Brothers. They were also the recipients of the 1998 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Set Design for their work on the play ''The Chairs''. Careers The Quay Brothers reside and work in England, having moved there in 1969 to study at the Royal College of Art, London after studying illustration (Timothy) and film (Stephen) at the Philadelphia College of Art, now the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. In England they made their first short films, which no longer exist after the only prints were irreparably damaged. They spent some time in the Netherlands in the 1970s and then returned to England, where they teamed up with another Royal College student, Keith Griffiths, who produced all of their films. Karlheinz Stockhausen (; 22 August 1928 – 5 December 2007) was a German composer, widely acknowledged by critics as one of the most important but also controversial composers of the 20th and early 21st centuries. (Friday from Light), the main body of which is also titled ''Freitag-Versuchung'' (Friday Temptation), is the fifth to be composed of the seven operas that comprise '' Licht'' (Light), by Karlheinz Stockhausen. It was the last of the operas to receive a staged production with the composer's involvement. History was commissioned by Udo Zimmermann of the Oper Leipzig, which gave the staged premiere on 12 September 1996. Three subsequent performances were given on September 13, 14, and 15. The musical direction and sound projection was done by the composer. The staging was done by Uwe Wand. Stage, costume, object and lighting designs were from Johannes Conen. Emma Hauck
Emma Hauck (14 August 1878 – 1 April 1920) was a German outsider artist known for her artistic, handwritten letters to her husband while she was institutionalized in a mental hospital. Though these letters were never delivered, they have since come to be regarded as works of art due to their abstraction and repetitive content. In many cases the letters consist of only the words "Come sweetheart" or "Come" written over and over in flowing script. Biography Emma Hauck was born in Ellwangen, Germany, on 14 August 1878. On February 7, 1909, she was admitted to the psychiatric hospital at the University of Heidelberg at the age of 30, diagnosed with dementia praecox due to severe psychosis. Dementia praecox (meaning a "premature dementia" or "precocious madness") is a disused psychiatric diagnosis that originally designated a chronic, deteriorating psychotic disorder characterized by rapid cognitive disintegration, usually beginning in the late teens or early adulthood.
