''Improvision'' is an album by guitarist Alex Machacek, drummer Jeff Sipe, and bassist Matthew Garrison. It was recorded in April 2007, and was released later that year by Abstract Logix. Reception In a review for ''Jazz Times'', Forrest Dylan Bryant praised the album's "quicksilver melody and locomotive rhythm," and wrote: "this progressive fusion disc proclaims the continued vitality of electric and electronic jazz." John Kelman of ''All About Jazz'' awarded the album a full 5 stars, calling it "another step forward for a kind of intelligent fusion that juxtaposes inspired soloing with near-telepathic interplay and imaginative writing." Alex Machacek
Alex Machacek (born 1 July 1972, Tulln an der Donau, Austria) is an Austrian jazz fusion guitarist. Early years Machacek was born to a Czech family in Tulln, Austria. His family had moved to Austria in the 1960s as refugees. Since then, they have adopted Austria as their nation. He started playing the guitar at the age of eight by taking classical guitar lessons for six years at a music school in Vienna. Machacek's early influences were heavy metal musicians and bands such as Iron Maiden, KISS, Deep Purple and Queen. However, in the mid-1980s, he was attracted to the music of Mike Stern, John Scofield, Allan Holdsworth, Frank Zappa, Chick Corea and John McLaughlin. He stated that he is influenced by all the music that he liked, including heavy metal and hard rock. Jeff Sipe
Jeff Sipe (born January 31, 1959), also known as Apt. Q258, is an American drummer. He is a rock and jazz fusion drummer but is proficient in other styles. He is a founding member of Aquarium Rescue Unit with Bruce Hampton. He was a member of Leftover Salmon and the Zambiland Orchestra, an experimental big band with members of Phish and Widespread Panic. Matthew Garrison
Matthew Justin Garrison (born June 2, 1970) is an American jazz bassist. Since 2011, he has run ShapeShifter Lab in Brooklyn, New York, with Fortuna Sung. Described by ''the New York Times'' as "an electric bass virtuoso", he has toured with Herbie Hancock. His 2000 debut album, ''Matthew Garrison'', was described by ''Bass Player'' magazine as having "raised the bar" for electric bass players. In 2010, Garrison toured with R&B singer Whitney Houston during her Nothing but Love World Tour. Early life and pre-solo career The son of Jimmy Garrison (bassist with: Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane) and modern dancer Roberta Escamilla Garrison, Matthew spent much of his childhood in Rome, Italy. Jazz Fusion
Jazz fusion (also known as fusion and progressive jazz) is a music genre that developed in the late 1960s when musicians combined jazz harmony and jazz improvisation, improvisation with rock music, funk, and rhythm and blues. Electric guitars, amplifiers, and keyboards that were popular in rock and roll started to be used by jazz musicians, particularly those who had grown up listening to rock and roll. Jazz fusion arrangements vary in complexity. Some employ groove-based vamps fixed to a single key or a single chord with a simple, repeated melody. Others use elaborate chord progressions, unconventional time signatures, or melodies with counter-melodies. These arrangements, whether simple or complex, typically include improvised sections that can vary in length, much like in other forms of jazz. Abstract Logix is an American record label, based in Cary, North Carolina, which specializes in jazz fusion, world and jam band music. As of late 2022, Abstract Logix has released 66 titles from musicians spanning the globe. In 2019 they were voted "Best Record Label" in the JazzTimes Magazine Readers' Poll. History The company began as a music blog started by music enthusiast and computer programmer Souvik Dutta in 2002. ''All About Jazz'' is a website established by Michael Ricci in 1995. A volunteer staff publishes news, album reviews, articles, videos, and listings of concerts and other events having to do with jazz. Ricci maintains a related site, ''Jazz Near You'', about local concerts and events. The Jazz Journalists Association voted ''All About Jazz'' Best Website Covering Jazz for thirteen consecutive years between 2003 and 2015, when the category was retired.
