Images Festival
The Images Festival is a yearly event devoted to independent and experimental film, video art, new media and media installation that takes place each spring in Toronto. History The Images festival was founded in 1987, originally conceived as an alternative to the Toronto Festival of Festivals (now known as Toronto International Film Festival). Originally titled Northern Visions, the inaugural board included Kim Tomaczak, Paulette Phillips, Ross Turnbull, Marc Glassman, Annette Mangaard, Richard Fung, and Jeanine Marchessault. Since 2005, Images has also presented international tours of Canadian media artists. Festival Images is the largest festival of experimental film and video in North America. Zacharias Kunuk
Zacharias Kunuk ( iu, ᓴᖅᑲᓕᐊᓯ ᑯᓄᒃ, born November 27, 1957) is a Canadian Inuk producer and director most notable for his film '' Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner'', the first Canadian dramatic feature film produced entirely in Inuktitut. He is the president and co-founder with Paul Qulitalik, Paul Apak Angilirq, and the only non-Inuit, ex-New Yorker team member, Norman Cohn, of Igloolik Isuma Productions, Canada's first independent Inuit production company. Nelson Henricks
Nelson Henricks (born 1963) is a Canadian artist known for his video works. Originally from Bow Island, Alberta, he received a diploma in visual arts from the Alberta College of Art. In 1991 he relocated to Montréal and obtained a Bachelor of Fine arts in Cinema from Concordia University. Henricks also works as a writer and curator. His texts have been published in many periodicals and publications relating to contemporary art, including the magazines Fuse, Esse, Parachute and Public. Richard Fung
Richard Fung (born 1954) is a video artist, writer, public intellectual and theorist who currently lives and works in Toronto, Ontario. He was born in Port of Spain, Trinidad and is openly gay. Fung is a professor at OCAD University. He earned an undergraduate degree at the University of Toronto, and received a MEd in sociology and cultural studies at University of Toronto. Fung's work in video explores the role of Asian men in gay pornography, while addressing the intersections between colonialism, immigration, racism, homophobia, and AIDS. Many of his works have been presented at venues in Canada and the United States of America. Fung is an activist and founded the Toronto-based organization Gay Asians of Toronto in 1980. Barbara Sternberg
Barbara Sternberg (born in 1945) is a Canadian film director known for her experimental films. Sternberg directed films such as ''Opus 40'' (1979), ''Transitions'' (1982), ''At Present'' (1990), ''Through and Through'' (1992), and ''Midst'' (1997). Early life Sternberg was born in Toronto, Ontario on April 24, 1945. In her youth, she created art by writing books for her family members. Sternberg said that her use of photos and text in these books is "similar to the way I work now." She created her first film using her father's 16 mm camera in order to make a gift for her husband.
