Iltja Ntjarra Many Hands Art Centre
Iltja Ntjarra Many Hands Art Centre, or Many Hands Art Centre, is an Aboriginal owned and directed art centre based in Alice Springs and it is home to, and has a special focus on supporting, the Hermannsburg School; the best known artist of which was Albert Namatjira. It was established in 2004 by the Ngurratjuta/Pmara Ntjarra Aboriginal Coprporation as a place for Arrernte artists to come together to "paint, share and learn new techniques". The centre is also strongly committed to improving the economic participation of its artists, ethical work practices and returning the greatest possible percentage of sales to the artist. Alice Springs
Alice Springs ( aer, Mparntwe) is the third-largest town in the Northern Territory of Australia. Known as Stuart until 31 August 1933, the name Alice Springs was given by surveyor William Whitfield Mills after Alice, Lady Todd (''née'' Alice Gillam Bell), wife of the telegraph pioneer Sir Charles Todd. Hermannsburg School
The Hermannsburg School is an art movement, or art style, which began at the Hermannsburg Mission in the 1930s. The best known artist of the style is Albert Namatjira. The movement is characterised by watercolours of western-style landscapes that depict the often striking colours of the Australian outback. Albert Namatjira
Albert Namatjira (born Elea Namatjira; 28 July 1902 – 8 August 1959) was an Arrernte painter from the MacDonnell Ranges in Central Australia, widely considered one of the greatest and most influential Australian artists. As a pioneer of contemporary Indigenous Australian art, he was arguably one of the most famous Indigenous Australians of his generation. He was the first Aboriginal artist to receive popularity from a wide Australian audience. A member of the Western Arrernte people, Namatjira was born and raised at the remote Hermannsburg Lutheran Mission, 126 km west-southwest from Alice Springs. Arrernte People
The Arrernte () people, sometimes referred to as the Aranda, Arunta or Arrarnta, are a group of Aboriginal Australian peoples who live in the Arrernte lands, at ''Mparntwe'' (Alice Springs) and surrounding areas of the Central Australia region of the Northern Territory. Many still speak one of the various Arrernte dialects. Some Arrernte live in other areas far from their homeland, including the major Australian cities and overseas. Rex Battarbee
Reginald Ernest Battarbee, (16 December 1893 – 2 September 1973) was an Australian artist notable for painting landscapes of Central Australia, and for teaching Aboriginal artist Albert Namatjira to paint. Early career Rex Battarbee was born in Warrnambool, Victoria, and educated at the local state school and at Warrnambool Academy. In January 1916, he enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force and joined the 58th Battalion in France. During the fighting at Bullecourt, he was shot through the chest, face and both arms. He was invalided to Australia and hospitalized until late 1920; his left arm remained crippled. Unable to resume farmwork, in 1921–23 Battarbee studied commercial art in Melbourne, but developed a preference for the outdoor life of a landscape painter. Therese Ryder
Therese Ryder (born 1946) (skin name: Ngale – Perrule) is an Eastern Arrernte artist from Ltyentye Apurte Community, 82 km south east of Alice Springs. Ryder, part of the Iltja Ntjarra Many Hands Art Centre, is primarily a landscape artist and paints her traditional lands in the Central Desert. Ryder is also a linguist who significantly contributed to the "Central and Eastern Arrernte Dictionary" (1994) and also authored a book "Ayeye thipe-akerte: Arrernte stories about birds" (2017). Life and work Ryder was born at Todd River Station where her father Jack worked mustering cattle and her mother Nancy as a cook. Namatjira Project
The Namatjira Project is an Australian Community development, community cultural development project, launched in 2009, conducted by arts and social change company Big hART, Big ''h''ART. It is based in the Aboriginal Australians, Aboriginal communities of Hermannsburg, Northern Territory, Hermannsburg (NT) and Alice Springs in the Northern Territory of Australia. Its focus is the life and work of the late Albert Namatjira, an Arrernte people, Arrernte watercolour landscape artist.
