Illinoise
''Illinoise'' is a 2023 dance revue musical with music and lyrics by Sufjan Stevens and an original story by Justin Peck and Jackie Sibblies Drury. The musical was inspired by Stevens' 2005 album ''Illinois''. The show is directed and choreographed by Peck. After summer festival and regional productions and an off-Broadway tryout, the show debuted on Broadway in April 2024 at the St. James Theatre. Reviews were positive, and the musical received 4 nominations at the 77th Tony Awards, including Best Musical. His fifth studio album, it features songs referencing places, events, and persons related to the U.S. state of Illinois. ''Illinois'' is Stevens' second based on a U.S. state—part of a planned series of fifty that began with the 2003 album ''Michigan'' and that Stevens has since acknowledged was a joke. Stevens recorded and produced the album at multiple venues in New York City using low-fidelity studio equipment and a variety of instruments between late 2004 and early 2005. Sufjan Stevens ( ; born July 1, 1975) is an American singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist. He has released nine solo studio albums and multiple collaborative albums with other artists. Stevens has received Grammy and Academy Award nominations. His debut album, '' A Sun Came'', was released in 2000 on the Asthmatic Kitty label, which he co-founded with his stepfather. Robert Fairchild (born June 9, 1987) is an American dancer and actor. He is best known for originating the role Jerry Mulligan in the musical ''An American in Paris'', and as Munkustrap in the 2019 film ''Cats''. He was a principal dancer at the New York City Ballet. Early life Fairchild was raised in Salt Lake City. His mother is a dietitian and his father worked for Utah's wildlife resources.
