Illinois Route 96 (IL 96) is a north–south state highway in far western Illinois. It runs from IL 100 in Kampsville, not far from a ferry crossing across the Illinois River, to IL 94 north of Terre Haute. Route description Illinois 96 follows much of the Great River Road in Illinois north from Kampsville, where it runs west to the Mississippi River and then turns north, passing U.S. Route 54 at a rural intersection and Interstate 72 at an old terminus near Kinderhook. It overlaps Illinois Route 106 west of Kinderhook and then runs parallel to Illinois Route 57 into Quincy. Within Quincy it follows 36th Street, State Street and 24th Street before overlapping briefly with U.S. Route 24. It also overlaps U.S. Route 136 in Hamilton, IL (across from Keokuk, Iowa) and Illinois Route 9 from Niota to Dallas City, Illinois. Kampsville, Illinois
Kampsville is a village in Calhoun County, Illinois, United States, located on the west bank of the Illinois River. The population was 310 at the 2022 census. Name Kampsville was originally known as ''Beeman's Landing'', after James L. Beeman, a ferry operator on the Illinois River. After Stephen Farrow purchased the ferry from Beeman, the name was changed to ''Farrowtown.'' The name ''Vedder'' was used when the post office was established in 1857. The name ''Kampsville'' was made official on 6 March 1872 and refers to Michael A. Kamp, who served as president of the village board and was also a postmaster at Silver Creek, north of Kampsville. General information The Kampsville ferry crosses the Illinois River and connects the Kampsville segment of Illinois Route 108 with its remainder in Greene County. Gulfport is a village in Henderson County, Illinois, United States. As of the 2010 census, the village population was 54, down from 207 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Burlington, IA–IL Micropolitan Statistical Area. The village was completely submerged, save the roofs of some homes and buildings, by a levee break during the flood of 2008. Geography Gulfport is located on the western edge of Henderson County at (40.808989, −91.083733). It is bordered to the west by the Mississippi River, which is also the state boundary with Iowa. U.S. Route 34 passes through the village, crossing the Mississippi via the Great River Bridge to Burlington, Iowa. To the east US 34 leads to Monmouth and to Galesburg. Niota, Illinois
Niota (also East Fort Madison, East Fort Madison Station) is an unincorporated community in Appanoose Township, Hancock County, in the U.S. state of Illinois. The community is located on the bank of the Mississippi River and is at the eastern end of the Fort Madison Toll Bridge, which connects Niota to Fort Madison, Iowa. Niota is the western terminus of Illinois Route 9 and is also served by Illinois Route 96, which is part of the Great River Road. History The community has fought Mississippi River flooding (cresting levees) through its history. In response to Upper Mississippi River flooding in April 1965, the US Coast Guard sent its ''Goldenrod'' to the community on May 3, 1965, for relief. Keokuk is a city in and a county seat of Lee County, Iowa, United States, along with Fort Madison. It is Iowa's southernmost city. The population was 9,900 at the time of the 2020 census. Illinois Route 106 (IL 106) is a east–west state highway in western Illinois. It runs from a new interchange with Interstate 72 (I-72) near East Hannibal (across from Hannibal, Missouri) to U.S. Route 67 (US 67) in White Hall. Route description IL 106 is an undivided, two-lane surface road for its entire length. A large portion west of Winchester largely parallels I-72/US 36. Starting at I-72/US 36 interchange at East Hannibal, IL 106 travels southeastward before turning eastward near Aladdin. In Hull, it begins to overlaps IL 96.
