Illinois Route 166 (IL 166) is a north–south state road in southern Illinois, United States. The route runs from its southern terminus at U.S. Route 45 in New Burnside to its northern terminus at Illinois Route 13 east of Marion. Route 166 serves the counties of Johnson and Williamson. It is maintained by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT). Route description Route 166 begins at a 3-way intersection with U.S. Route 45 on the east side of New Burnside. The route heads north from New Burnside, passing through rural Johnson County before crossing into Williamson County. In Williamson County, the highway turns west and passes through Creal Springs. Route 166 turns north after passing through Creal Springs and continues through farmland until it reaches its northern terminus at a traffic light-controlled intersection with Illinois 13, a four-lane divided highway. New Burnside, Illinois
New Burnside is a village in Johnson County, Illinois, United States. The population was 211 at the 2010 census. History In 1878, New Burnside peaked in population at 1,200 when the railroad ran through the middle of the town. The population decreased gradually after the railroad was abandoned. More recently, the Tunnel Hill State Trail for bicycles was built along the abandoned line. The village was founded in 1872, and was a Cairo and Vincennes Railroad boom-town. Much of its founding was based on the same coal mining industry that grew Harrisburg and Carrier Mills, but slowly turned to an orchard-based economy by 1900. Pittsburg is a village in Williamson County, Illinois. The population was 572 at the 2010 census. History Pittsburg was established in 1906 as part of a mining operation developed by coal entrepreneur John Colp (for whom nearby Colp is named). Colp named the village for Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, as he hoped it would achieve that city's prosperity. Many of the streets in the village were likewise named for locations in Pennsylvania, including Scranton Avenue, Lehigh Valley Avenue, Hocking Valley Avenue, and Pennsylvania Avenue. Johnson County is a county in the U.S. state of Illinois. According to the 2010 census, it has a population of 12,582. Its county seat is Vienna. It is located in the southern portion of Illinois known locally as " Little Egypt". History Johnson County was organized in 1812 out of Randolph County. It was named for Richard Mentor Johnson, who was then a U.S. Congressman from Kentucky.
