Illegal Academy
The Illegal Academy ( no, Det Illegale Akademi) was an underground Norwegian teaching institution for artists. The Illegal Academy was established in Oslo in 1941. It was created as a response to Nazified Norwegian arts education after the Norwegian National Academy of Craft and Art Industry was closed and the Norwegian National Academy of Fine Arts was taken over by Søren Onsager. Instructors at the academy included Axel Revold, Jean Heiberg, Henrik Sørensen, Per Palle Storm, Stinius Fredriksen, and Per Krohg, and its students included Edmund Ree, Harald Peterssen, Ulf Dreyer, Victor Sparre, Olav Johan Andreassen, Gladys Raknerud, Arnold Haukeland, and Liv Nergaard. Pilestredet
Pilestredet is a street in Oslo, Norway which begins in the Sentrum, Oslo, city center and runs through the boroughs of St. Hanshaugen and Frogner. The street was originally called Rakkerstrædet in reference to the city dump being located along the road at today's Pilestredet Park. It was renamed in 1820 to Pilestrædveien for all the willow trees along the road. According to historian Alf Collett the renaming came about after pressure from the Brochmann family, who did not want to live on a road named after rubbish. Rikshospitalet was located there earlier, now superseded by Pilestredet Park. Oslo Metropolitan University is found along the street, and the Ullevål Hageby Line, Ullevål Hageby tram line runs along parts of it. The Blitz (movement), Blitz movement is housed in Pilestredet 30. She also created portraits and produced puppet performances for educational use. Biography Nergaard was born in Oppegård in Akershus county, the daughter of Tordis Nergaard and Eivin Nickelsen. Arnold Haukeland
Arnold Haukeland (28 March 1920 – 18 June 1983) was a Norwegian sculptor. Biography He was born at Verdal in Nord-Trøndelag, Norway. He was the son of Arnold Martin Haukeland (1891–1977) and Lilly Karoline Wallem (1896–1969). He attended the Norwegian Institute of Technology (NTH) in Trondheim where he studied engineering. During the German occupation of Norway, he studied sculpture with Per Palle Storm and Stinius Fredriksen at the Illegal Academy. After the liberation of Norway at the end of World War II, he worked in the restoration studio of Nidaros Cathedral. In the spring of 1946 he was in Paris, where he briefly attended art school at Académie de la Grande Chaumiere. In 1946 Haukeland married photographer Randi Bothner (1921–2012). Victor Sparre
Victor Sparre (né Smith; 4 November 1919 – 16 March 2008) was a Norwegian painter, glass designer and non-fiction writer. Personal life Sparre was born in Bærum as the son of librarian Victor Alf Smith and Eli Sparre. He was married to nurse Aase Marie Thomassen from 1955. Career Sparre studied at the Norwegian National Academy of Craft and Art Industry from 1936. He became a member of the Oxford Group. In 1938 he enrolled at the Norwegian National Academy of Fine Arts, and assisted Axel Revold making decorations for the Oslo City Hall. During the occupation of Norway by Nazi Germany he took part in resistance work and joined the underground art academy led by Axel Revold and Jean Heiberg, and later also joined the military resistance organization Milorg.
