Ilko Kucheriv Democratic Initiatives Foundation
Iryna Bekeshkina ( uk, Ірина Ериківна Бекешкіна, 4 February 1952 – 20 March 2020) was a Ukrainian sociologist. She was the head of the Ilko Kucheriv Democratic Initiatives Foundation from 2010 until 2020. She specialized in the study of Ukrainian society and politics. She was also a frequent media commentator and policy advocate. Life and career In 1974, Bekeshkina graduated from the Taras Shevchenko University of Kyiv with a degree in philosophy. She then completed her graduate studies at the Institute of Philosophy within the Soviet Academy of Sciences. Bekeshkina was a scientific editor of Філософська думка (''Philosophical Thought'', uk), one of the leading philosophy journals of Ukraine. In 1977, she became a researcher at the Soviet Academy of Sciences, and beginning in 1990 she worked as a researcher at the Institute of Sociology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Dmitry Mikhaylovich Karbyshev (russian: Дмитрий Михайлович Карбышев; , Omsk — 18 February 1945, Mauthausen, Austria) was an officer of the Russian Imperial Army, a Red Army general, professor of the Soviet General Staff Academy ( Doctor of Military Sciences), and Hero of the Soviet Union (posthumously). Biography Early years Karbyshev was born in Omsk to the well-known Siberian Cossack starshyna family of Kryashen origin and spoke both Russian and the Kryashen dialect of Tatar. His father died when he was twelve, and he was raised by his mother. Despite financial difficulties, he graduated from the Siberian Cadet Corps (today Omsk Cadet Corps of Ministry of Defense) in 1898 and went on to attend the Saint-Petersburg Nikolaev Military Engineering College (Uchilishche), from which he graduated in 1900. Derussification in Ukraine ( uk, Дерусифікація/деросіянізація в Україні, translit=Derusyfikatsiia/derosiianizatsiia v Ukraïni) is a process of removing Russian influence from the country of Ukraine. Derussification began after the collapse of the USSR and intensified with the demolition of monuments to Lenin during Euromaidan and the further systemic process of decommunization in Ukraine. The Russo-Ukrainian War gave a strong impetus to the process. The process manifests itself in the renaming of toponyms named after Russian statesmen and cultural figures, or those that are believed to reflect Russianism and the Russian worldview, or are otherwise associated with Russia.
