Ilha Fiscal
Ilha Fiscal, or Fiscal Island, is an island in Guanabara Bay, bordering the historic city center of Rio de Janeiro, in southeastern Brazil. Originally named by Europeans as Rat Island (), its current name comes from the fact that the customs department has been stationed there before Guarda Fiscal, serving the port of the then-capital of the Empire during the nineteenth century. The customs offices were housed at a Neo-Gothic palace built under Pedro II, which occupies most of the island. The island became famous as the site of the famous Fiscal Island Ball (), the last royal ball of the Empire before the coup d'état that proclaimed the Republic in November 1889. The University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) is a Public university, public research university in Chicago, Illinois. Ricardo Kotscho (born in São Paulo on March 16, 1948) is a Brazilian journalist and author. He was awarded twice with the Esso Journalism Award and twice with the Vladimir Herzog Award. During his career, he worked in several major newspapers, magazines and TV channels, such as O Estado de S. Paulo, IstoÉ magazine, Folha de S. Paulo, Rede 21, Canal 21 of Rede Bandeirantes, Sistema Brasileiro de Televisão, SBT and Central Nacional de Televisão, CNT/Rede Gazeta, Gazeta. The Mensalão scandal ( pt, Escândalo do Mensalão, ) was a major parliamentary vote-buying scandal by Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's administration that threatened to bring down his government in 2005. ''Mensalão'' is a neologism, a variant of the word for "big monthly payment" (''salário mensal'' or ''mensalidade''). The scandal broke on June 6, 2005 when Brazilian deputy Roberto Jefferson ( Brazilian Labour Party) told the ''Folha de S.Paulo'' newspaper that the ruling Workers' Party (PT) had paid a number of deputies 30,000 reais (around US$12,000 at the time) a month to vote for legislation favored by the ruling party. The funds allegedly came from state-owned companies' advertising budgets, funneled through an advertising agency owned by Marcos Valério. The Oceanographic Institute of the University of São Paulo ( pt, Instituto Oceanográfico da Universidade de São Paulo, IO-USP), due to its name in Portuguese, was founded in 1946. It began as an independent institute, sponsored by the government, but was later incorporated into the University of São Paulo, in 1951. It was founded to provide scientific research and data in support of fisheries and exploitation of all the available marine resources along the Brazilian coast, especially in the state of São Paulo. IO-USP was transformed into a University Unit in 1972, and started to offer post-graduate Masters courses in biological and physical oceanography in 1973. Brazilian Battleship São Paulo
''São Paulo'' was a dreadnought battleship designed and built by the British company Vickers for the Brazilian Navy. It was the second of two ships in the , and was named after the state and city of São Paulo. ''São Paulo'' was launched on 19 April 1909 and commissioned on 12 July 1910. Soon after, it was involved in the Revolt of the Lash (''Revolta de Chibata''), in which crews on four Brazilian warships mutinied over poor pay and harsh punishments for even minor offenses. After entering the First World War, Brazil offered to send ''São Paulo'' and its sister to Britain for service with the Grand Fleet, but Britain declined since both vessels were in poor condition and lacked the latest fire control technology.
