Ilan Baruch
Ilan Baruch (born 1974) is an Israeli En plein air, plein air landscape painter. His "cactus" series, painted over a period of three years, began as "fastidiously rendered... sun-drenched, [and] naturalistic," progressing to images that are "expressive [and] closely cropped." Invited to create a pair of new "Delft" tiles for the 2014 exhibition Blue-and-White Delftware, Baruch painted one with an olive tree and another with an image of the Dome of the Rock. ''En plein air'' (; French for 'outdoors'), or ''plein air'' painting, is the act of painting outdoors. This method contrasts with studio painting or academic rules that might create a predetermined look. The theory of 'En plein air' painting is credited to Pierre-Henri de Valenciennes (1750–1819), first expounded in a treatise entitled ''Reflections and Advice to a Student on Painting, Particularly on Landscape'' (1800), where he developed the concept of landscape portraiture by which the artist paints directly onto canvas ''in situ'' within the landscape. It enabled the artist to better capture the changing details of weather and light. The invention of portable canvases and easels allowed the practice to develop, particularly in France, and in the early 1830s the Barbizon school of painting in natural light was highly influential. The Dome of the Rock ( ar, قبة الصخرة, Qubbat aṣ-Ṣakhra) is an Islamic shrine located on the Temple Mount in the Old City of Jerusalem, a site also known to Muslims as the ''al-Haram al-Sharif'' or the Al-Aqsa Compound. Its initial construction was undertaken by the Umayyad Caliphate on the orders of Abd al-Malik during the Second Fitna in 691–692 CE, and it has since been situated on top of the site of the Second Jewish Temple (built in to replace the destroyed Solomon's Temple), which was destroyed by the Romans in 70 CE. The original dome collapsed in 1015 and was rebuilt in 1022–23. The Dome of the Rock is the world's oldest surviving work of Islamic architecture. Planning for a new building began in 1963 when the museum's collections of modern and contemporary art began to outgrow the premises. The Ashdod Museum of Art is located in the center of Ashdod, Israel, near the marina. The museum holds exhibitions of Israeli and international contemporary art. The museum has 12 galleries and two halls. In addition, it has a pyramidal space where cultural events are held. The museum was inaugurated in 2003. The museum was officially recognized by the State of Israel only in 2009. The Ramat Gan Museum of Israeli Art is an art museum that displays Israeli art, located on Abba Hillel Street of Ramat Gan, Israel. The museum was opened on 4 April 1987. History The building was built in the 1930s with the initial purpose of serving as an industrial plant. Prior to the opening of the museum, the building was converted into a museum space by architect Danny Schwarz, in order to serve its new purpose. In 2012, the museum had 23,000 visitors. Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design ( he, בצלאל, אקדמיה לאמנות ועיצוב) is a public college of design and art located in Jerusalem. Established in 1906 by Jewish painter and sculptor Boris Schatz, Bezalel is Israel's oldest institution of higher education and is considered the most prestigious art school in the country.
