Iglesia De La Divina Providencia
The Iglesia de la Divina Providencia (English: ''Church of the Divine Providence'') is a church managed by the Sisters of Providence, in Santiago, Chile. It gives its name to the district of Providencia and also to Avenida Providencia. The church was originally declared as a National Monument in 1975, but this designation was revoked and again designated as a national monument in 1989. History In 1854, the land where the church stands was acquired to build an orphan asylum for the purpose of replacing the old asylum located on the current Huérfanos Street. Its operation was given to the Sisters of Providence by the then minister Antonio Varas.Several years later, Domingo Santa María approved the construction of a church for the orphanage. The Sisters of Providence are a religious institute of Roman Catholic sisters founded in 1843 by Mother Émilie Gamelin. Providencia (, Spanish: "providence") is a commune of Chile located in Santiago Province, Santiago Metropolitan Region. Part of Greater Santiago, it is bordered by the communes of Santiago to the west, Recoleta to the northwest, Las Condes and Vitacura to the northeast, La Reina to the east, and Ñuñoa to the south. It belongs to the Northeastern zone of Santiago de Chile. Avenida Providencia
Avenida Providencia is a major thoroughfare in Santiago, Chile. It runs along the commune of Providencia. Description Providencia begins at the northern terminus of Vicuña Mackenna Avenue as a continuation of Alameda Avenue. Immediately, the opposite traffic lanes are divided by the Plaza Baquedano. The two northernmost lanes of Providencia Avenue split from the westbound lanes and continue westward as Merced Street. The northern side of the avenue is occupied by Balmaceda Park. Just east of José Miguel Claro Avenue, Providencia splits into two one-way streets. Westbound continues under the name Providencia, and the eastbound becomes Nueva Providencia Avenue (formerly known as 11 de Septiembre Avenue), which came into existence in 1980 as a measure to reduce traffic congestion on Providencia Avenue and was part of a dual project that also included the eastward extension of the Line 1 of the Santiago Metro.
