Ifakara Health Institute
The Ifakara Health Institute (IHI) is a health research organization with offices in Ifakara, Dar es Salaam, Ikwiriri, Bagamoyo, and Mtwara, Tanzania. The institute conducts health-related research in a variety of areas, including malaria and HIV/AIDS. History A field laboratory of the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute was founded in Ifakara in 1956 by Rudolf Geigy. From 1981-1984, it was led by Marcel Tanner. It was renamed the "Ifakara Centre" in 1991, the "Ifakara Health Research and Development Centre, IHRDC" in 1996, and the "Ifakara Health Institute" in 2008. The Ifakara Health Institute was featured in the Al Jazeera Lifelines documentary ''The End Game'' in 2014. Rudolf Geigy
Rudolf Geigy (20 December 1902 – 8 March 1995) was a Swiss biologist and a professor of embryology and genetics at the University of Basel. He established the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute and studied tropical diseases. Life and career Geigy was born in Basel, Switzerland on 20 December 1902. He was the son of Johann Rudolf Geigy-Merian and Helene Schlumberger who belonged to the family that established Geigy, a major pharmaceutical firm. He studied zoology at Basel and Geneva. In 1938 he became an associate professor of embryology and genetics at the University of Basel. In 1943 he established the Swiss Tropical Institute (now Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute) in Basel where he was a director until 1972. He also established the Ifakara Health Institute in Ifakara, Tanzania after a visit in 1949, and a research institute on the Ivory Coast. Ifakara Health Institute Tower
Ifakara is a small rural town in the Kilombero District, Morogoro Region, south central Tanzania. It is the headquarters of the Kilombero District administration and the main trading centre for Kilombero and Ulanga districts. Fredros Okumu
Fredros Okumu is a Kenyan parasitologist and entomologist, who currently works as director of science at the Ifakara Health Institute (IHI) in Tanzania. His primary research interests concern the interactions between humans and mosquitoes. Education Okumu began his education in his native Kenya, studying Public Health at Moi University and subsequently a masters in Applied Parasitology at the University of Nairobi. He achieved a second masters in geoscience and environmental science at Lund University, Sweden. In 2012 Okumu was awarded a PhD from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, followed in 2019 by an MBA in International Health Management from the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute. Malaria
Malaria is a mosquito-borne infectious disease that affects humans and other animals. Malaria causes symptoms that typically include fever, tiredness, vomiting, and headaches. In severe cases, it can cause jaundice, seizures, coma, or death. Symptoms usually begin ten to fifteen days after being bitten by an infected mosquito.
