Ice Sledge Hockey At The 2010 Winter Paralympics
The ice sledge hockey competition of the 2010 Winter Paralympics was held at the UBC Winter Sports Centre in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, from 13 March to 20 March 2010. For the first time, women were allowed to compete in ice sledge hockey at the Paralympic Games. Following high hopes in the host nation, Canada's defeat in the semi-finals was described as causing "national despair". Medalists Qualification Six slots were reserved for the top six finishers at the 2009 IPC Ice Sledge Hockey World Championships, one slot was reserved for the winner of the 2009 IPC Ice Sledge Hockey Paralympic Qualifier, and one slot was reserved for the host country, Canada. Since Canada placed in the top six of the World Championships, the eighth slot was given to the second-place finisher at the Paralympic Qualifier. The Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre (formerly UBC Winter Sports Centre, also known as UBC Thunderbird Arena) is a LEED Silver certified indoor arena in Greater Vancouver, on the campus of the University of British Columbia. Located in the University Endowment Lands, it is just outside the city limits of Vancouver, British Columbia. The arena is home to the UBC Thunderbirds men's and women's ice hockey teams, and contains one international-size 61 m × 30 m (200 ft × 98.4 ft) ice rink. The facility was built around an older ice hockey facility, the historic Father Bauer Arena, which opened in October 1963. Raymond William Maluta (born July 24, 1954) is a Canadian retired professional ice hockey player who played 25 games in the National Hockey League for the Boston Bruins between 1975 and 1976. Maluta was born in Flin Flon, Manitoba. Maluta scored just two goals in his NHL career, but one of them was the first Boston goal of the 1976-77 season. It was scored against Pete LoPresti of the Minnesota North Stars in Boston's 6-2 victory. Alexi Salamone (born 17 June 1987 in Bryansk, Russia, Soviet Union) is a Paralympian ice sledge hockey player from the United States. Early life Salamone was born near Chernobyl, the site of a nuclear accident that took place 14 months prior to his birth. He was born with deformed legs, both of which were amputated at the Children's Institute of Prosthetics in Moscow when he was four years old. Orphaned, he was adopted by the Salamones, a couple from Buffalo, New York, and moved to the United States at the age of six. Ice sledge hockey Salamone was introduced to ice sports by the Skating Association for the Blind and Handicapped (S.A.B.A.H.).
