Ice Hockey At The 1990 Goodwill Games
At the 1990 Goodwill Games, the Ice hockey events were held in Kennewick and Tacoma, Washington, United States between July and August 1990. Prior to the first game played by the Soviet Union national ice hockey team, star player Sergei Fedorov defected and signed a five-year contract with the Detroit Red Wings. Soviet administrator Yuri Korolev insisted that his player was stolen by premeditated actions and, rather than defecting on his own "under normal circumstances". He said that "having this happen on the eve of the goodwill games, is like a spoon of tar in a barrel of honey". Tri-Cities Coliseum
The Toyota Center is a multi-purpose arena in the northwest United States, located in Kennewick, Washington. Opened in 1988 as the Tri-Cities Coliseum, the arena's name was changed in 2004 to the Three Rivers Coliseum to match the Three Rivers Convention Center, which was built next door in the same year. In October 2005, a deal was reached between the city of Kennewick and Toyota, which agreed to pay $2 million over ten years for naming rights. The city uses the funds for needed improvements and upgrades to the facility. A smaller facility next door, built by the city in 1998, was named "Toyota Arena." Soviet Union National Ice Hockey Team
The Soviet national ice hockey team was the national men's ice hockey team of the Soviet Union. From 1954, the team won at least one medal each year at either the Ice Hockey World Championships or the Olympic hockey tournament. After 1991, the Soviet team competed as the CIS team (part of the Unified Team) at the 1992 Winter Olympics. After the Olympics, the CIS team ceased to exist and was replaced by Russia at the 1992 World Championship. Sergei Fedorov
Sergei Viktorovich Fyodorov (; born December 13, 1969) is a Russian former professional ice hockey player and the current head coach of CSKA Moscow of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). During his playing career, for which he is best known for his 13 seasons with the Detroit Red Wings, Fedorov was primarily a centre, but occasionally played as a winger or defenceman. Fedorov was one of the first hockey players to defect from his native Soviet Union in order to play in the National Hockey League (NHL). While playing with Detroit, he won the Stanley Cup three times, as well as the Hart Memorial Trophy as the NHL's most valuable player in 1994. Yuri Korolev (ice Hockey)
Yuri Vasilyevich Korolev (russian: Юрий Васильевич Королёв; born 6 June 1934) is a Russian ice hockey administrator, and retired coach and civil servant. His career of educating athletes and coaches included the State Committee for Sports and Physical Education and the All-Union Council on Physical Culture and Sports. He was head of the research group for the Soviet Union national ice hockey team for 28 years, when the Soviets won seventeen Ice Hockey World Championships and seven Winter Olympic Games gold medals.
