Ianca () is a town in Brăila County, Muntenia, Romania. At the 2002 census, the town had a population of 12,886 people, making it Brăila County's second-largest urban locality. History The first mention of the town dates to 1834. It officially became a town in 1989, as a result of the Romanian rural systematization program. Administration The town's area is 186 km², of which 10.9 km² have the status of residential area. The town administers six villages: Berlești, Gara Ianca, Oprișenești, Perișoru, Plopu and Târlele Filiu. It also features a large military base scheduled to be transformed into a civil airport. Romanian Rural Systematization Program
The Romanian rural systematization program was a social engineering program undertaken by Nicolae Ceaușescu's Romania primarily at the end of the 1980s. The legal framework for this program was established as early as 1974, but it only began in earnest in March 1988, after the Romanian authorities renounced most favoured nation status and the American human rights scrutiny which came with it. The declared aim of this program was to eliminate the differences between urban and rural, by the means of razing half of Romania's 13,000 villages and moving their residents into hundreds of new "agro-industrial centers" by 2000. The program gained notoriety in Europe, with protests from multiple countries – chiefly Hungary – as well as a Belgian-led initiative to save the Romanian villages by "adopting" them. Virgil Huzum (born Virgiliu Huzum; December 12, 1905–July 7, 1987) was a Romanian poet. Born in Ianca, Brăila County, his parents were Ion Huzum, a pharmacist, and Clara (''née'' Andoniu). He attended primary school in Darabani and FocÈ™ani, and went to Unirea High School in the latter town. While a student, he published verses in ''Anuarul Societății literare a Liceului "Unirea"''; he graduated in 1923. He studied pharmacy and obtained a degree in literature and philosophy from the University of Bucharest in 1931. He made his adult publication debut in 1924 in ''Adevărul literar È™i artistic''. Huzum's first published book was the 1926 ''À la manière de....'', a collection of poetic parodies and pastiches. Ion Theodorescu-Sion (; also known as Ioan Theodorescu-Sion or Teodorescu-Sion; January 2, 1882 – March 31, 1939) was a Romanian painter and draftsman, known for his contributions to modern art and especially for his traditionalist, primitivist, handicraft-inspired and Christian painting. Trained in academic art, initially an Impressionist, he dabbled in various modern styles in the years before World War I.
