Ian Sloan (politician)
Ian Sloan (born 24 May 1973) is a former Australian politician who served as MP for the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly electoral division of Daly representing the Country Liberal Party from 2020 to 2021. Pre-politics Immigration to Australia Sloan visited Australia as a backpacker in 1996. He planned to go to Queensland, however, whilst visiting Darwin, he decided to remain in the town. When he ran out of money, he decided to get a job at soon-to-be opened bar Shennanigans. In 2006, he opened the Virginia Tavern, followed by the Virginia Store in 2011 and the Berry Springs Tavern in 2014. Politics In January 2020, the then incumbent member for Daly and Leader of the Country Liberal Opposition Gary Higgins announced that, due to health reasons, he would retire from politics at the 2020 Northern Territory election. Northern Territory Legislative Assembly
The Legislative Assembly of the Northern Territory is the unicameral legislature of the Northern Territory of Australia. The Legislative Assembly has 25 members, each elected in single-member electorates for four-year terms. The voting method for the Assembly is the full-preferential voting system, having previously been optional preferential voting. Elections are on the fourth Saturday in August of the fourth year after the previous election, but can be earlier in the event of a no confidence vote in the Government. The most recent election for the Legislative Assembly was the 2020 election held on 22 August 2020. The next election is scheduled for 24 August 2024. Persons who are qualified under the ''Commonwealth Electoral Act 1918'' to vote for a member for the Northern Territory in the House of Representatives are qualified to vote at an election for the Legislative Assembly. Daly is an electoral division of the Legislative Assembly in Australia's Northern Territory. It was created in 2001, and takes its name from the Daly River region which lies at the heart of the electorate. Daly covers some 77,395 km², encompassing the towns of Adelaide River, Acacia Hills, Batchelor, Dundee Beach, Nauiyu Nambiyu, Pine Creek, Timber Creek and Wadeye. There were 5,622 people enrolled in the electorate as of August 2020. Daly is a relatively new electorate in the Northern Territory, having only been created in 2001. It replaced Victoria River, one of the Territory's original seats and best known as the seat of the Territory's first head of government, Goff Letts. It had been abolished when its namesake was moved out of the electorate by a redistribution. Gary Higgins
Gary John Higgins (born 26 May 1954) is an Australian former politician. A member of the Country Liberal Party, he was elected to represent the seat of Daly in the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly at the 2012 election. After the 2016 election, the CLP was reduced to only two members in the Legislative Assembly, with Higgins becoming party leader and Leader of the Opposition. Following health problems, he resigned both positions in favour of Lia Finocchiaro in February 2020, and retired at the 2020 election. Early life Higgins moved to the Northern Territory in 1986, and was employed in the Territory public service, where he became Director of Corporate Services at the Attorney-General's office. Dheran Young is an Australian Australian Labor Party, Labor politician who currently serves as MLA for Electoral division of Daly, Daly in the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly, having won a 2021 Daly by-election, by-election in September 2021. He is a Yaygirr, Yaegl man, and formerly the Regional Development Manager for the Wadeye Football League. The Country Liberal Party of the Northern Territory (CLP) is a centre-right political party in Australia's Northern Territory. In local politics it operates in a two-party system with the Australian Labor Party (ALP). 2020 Northern Territory General Election
The 2020 Northern Territory general election was held on 22 August 2020 to elect all 25 members of the Legislative Assembly in the unicameral Northern Territory Parliament. Members were elected through full preferential instant-runoff voting in single-member electorates, after the optional preferential voting system introduced for the 2016 election was abolished by the ''Electoral Legislation Amendment Act 2019'' in April 2019. 2021 Daly By-election
A by-election in the seat of Daly in the Northern Territory was held on 11 September 2021, following the resignation of Ian Sloan, the MLA for Daly, on 19 August 2021. Labor candidate Dheran Young won the by-election, taking the seat from the Country Liberal Party. It is the first time in Northern Territory electoral history that an incumbent government has won a seat from the opposition in a by-election.
