Ian Roberts (Australian Footballer)
Ian Roberts (born 3 April 1957) is a former Australian rules footballer in the Victorian Football League (VFL) for the Sydney Swans. Roberts was a supporter of VFL club South Melbourne as a child, and was later recruited to Souths from Frankston. He made his VFL debut with Souths in 1979 and made his name as a back pocket player as they relocated from Melbourne to Sydney in 1982. In a long career with the Swans spanning 13 seasons, Roberts played 157 games and kicked 33 goals, retiring at the end of 1991. Frankston Football Club, nicknamed the ''Dolphins'', is an Australian rules football club based in Frankston, Victoria, Frankston, Victoria (Australia), Victoria. The club, formed in 1887, has played in the Victorian Football League, Victorian Football Association/League almost continuously since 1966. Sydney Swans
The Sydney Swans are a professional Australian rules football club based in Sydney, New South Wales. The men's team competes in the Australian Football League (AFL), and the women's team in the AFL Women's (AFLW). The Swans also field a reserves men's team in the Victorian Football League (VFL). The club's origins trace back to 21 March 1873, when a meeting was held at the Clarendon Hotel in South Melbourne to establishing a junior football club, to be called the South Melbourne Football Club. Australian football, also called Australian rules football or Aussie rules, or more simply football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval field, often a modified cricket ground. Points are scored by kicking the oval ball between the central goal posts (worth six points), or between a central and outer post (worth one point, otherwise known as a "behind"). During general play, players may position themselves anywhere on the field and use any part of their bodies to move the ball. The primary methods are kicking, handballing and running with the ball. The Australian Football League (AFL) is the only fully professional competition of Australian rules football. Through the AFL Commission, the AFL also serves as the sport's governing body and is responsible for controlling the laws of the game. In the sport of Australian rules football, each of the eighteen players in a team is assigned to a particular named position on the field of play. These positions describe both the player's main role and by implication their location on the ground. As the game has evolved, tactics and team formations have changed, and the names of the positions and the duties involved have evolved too. There are 18 positions in Australian rules football, not including four (sometimes 6–8) interchange players who may replace another player on the ground at any time during play. The fluid nature of the modern game means the positions in football are not as formally defined as in sports such as rugby or American football.
