Ian Luxford
Ian F. Luxford (born 27 November 1952) is an Australian former representative rower. He was a three time Australian champion who represented at world championships and competed in the men's coxless pair event at the 1976 Summer Olympics. Club and state rowing Luxford was educated at Sydney Boys' High School where he took up rowing. He rowed in a Sydney High eight which contested the national schoolboy eight title at the Australian Rowing Championships in 1970. His senior club rowing was initially from the Sydney University Boat Club and later the Drummoyne Rowing Club. He first made state selection for New South Wales in the men's eight which contested and won the 1974 King's Cup at the annual Interstate Regatta. In 1975 he was again seated at seven in the New South Wales King's Cup winning eight. Luxford and Chris Shinners took a Sydney University coxed pair to the 1975 Australian Rowing Championships to contest the coxed pair national title. They placed second. The follow ... Rowing (sport)
Rowing, sometimes called crew in the United States, is the sport of racing boats using oars. It differs from paddling sports in that rowing oars are attached to the boat using oarlocks, while paddles are not connected to the boat. Rowing is divided into two disciplines: sculling and sweep rowing. In sculling, each rower holds two oars—one in each hand, while in sweep rowing each rower holds one oar with both hands. There are several boat classes in which athletes may compete, ranging from single sculls, occupied by one person, to shells with eight rowers and a coxswain, called eights. There are a wide variety of course types and formats of racing, but most elite and championship level racing is conducted on calm water courses long with several lanes marked using buoys. 1974 World Rowing Championships
The 1974 World Rowing Championships was the fourth World Rowing Championships. It was held from 4 to 8 September 1974 (for men) and from 29 August to 1 September 1974 (for women) on the Rotsee in Lucerne, Switzerland. The event was significantly extended from the 1970 edition, with the addition of both women's and lightweight men's events. Six women boat classes were added, three lightweight men classes, plus quad scull for men, increasing the number of boat classes from seven in 1970 to seventeen in 1974. This was also the last World Championships held on a quadrennial cycle – from this point, World Championships were held annually. Rowers At The 1976 Summer Olympics
Rowing is the act of propelling a human-powered watercraft using the sweeping motions of oars to displace water and generate reactional propulsion. Rowing is functionally similar to paddling, but rowing requires oars to be mechanically attached to the boat, and the rower drives the oar like a lever, exerting force in the ''same'' direction as the boat's travel; while paddles are completely hand-held and have no attachment to the boat, and are driven like a cantilever, exerting force ''opposite'' to the intended direction of the boat. Rusty Robertson
Russell Robertson (1927 – 17 February 1990), known as Rusty Robertson, was a New Zealand-born, world class rowing coach of New Zealand and later, Australian national representative rowing crews. He was the national rowing coach of New Zealand from 1967 to 1976, and the national coach of Australia from 1979 to 1984. Early life Robertson was born in 1927, the son of Amelia Dorothy and William John Robertson. He was from Oamaru in Otago and commenced rowing at the age of 16 at the Oamaru Rowing Club. A serious car accident broke his back and forced a premature retirement from rowing and an early start to coaching. He coached Oamaru crews for many years and was Club Captain for a decade. At long, his home town has the shortest rowing course in the country, and Robertson devised a training method by which rowers would use one arm only and go round and round in circles. Chris D. Shinners (born 8 June 1952) is an Australian rower. He was a six-time Australian champion who represented at world championships and competed in the men's coxless pair event at the 1976 Summer Olympics. Club and state rowing Shinners' senior club rowing was from the Sydney University Boat Club. He rowed in the Sydney University men's eight at the Australian Intervarsity Championships in 1971, 1972 and 1973. At the 1978 Intervarsity Championships he won the universities single sculls title, racing for Sydney Uni and in 1979 he placed second in that same event. Shinners first made state selection for New South Wales in the men's eight which contested the 1973 King's Cup at the annual Interstate Regatta. In 1974 and 1975 he stroked the New South Wales eight to King's Cup victories.
