Ian Laurance
Ian James Laurance (born 30 April 1940) is a former Australian politician who was a Liberal Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1974 to 1987, representing the seat of Gascoyne. He was a minister in the governments of Sir Charles Court and Ray O'Connor, and briefly served as deputy leader of the Liberal Party (from 1986 to 1987). Early life Laurance was born in Northam, in the Wheatbelt, but was educated in Perth, attending Perth Boys' School and John Curtin Senior High School. He went on to study at Graylands Teachers College and the University of Western Australia, subsequently working as a country schoolteacher. Laurance married Barbara Anne Berry (the daughter of George Berry) in 1964, with whom he had two children. Order Of Australia
The Order of Australia is an honour that recognises Australian citizens and other persons for outstanding achievement and service. It was established on 14 February 1975 by Elizabeth II, Queen of Australia, on the advice of the Australian Government. Before the establishment of the order, Australian citizens received British honours. George Berry (Australian Politician)
George William Berry (18 May 1913 – 4 April 1998) was an Australian politician who was a Liberal Party member of the Legislative Council of Western Australia from 1968 to 1980, representing Lower North Province. Berry was born in Perth to Annie Adelaide (née Holding) and George Berry. He attended the Fremantle Boys' School, but left at the age of 13. Berry enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) in 1941, and during the war served as a flight sergeant. After the war, he worked in Spearwood as a master butcher, and served on the Fremantle Road Board from 1946 to 1952. Berry moved to Carnarvon in 1954, where he farmed bananas. He served as secretary and treasurer of the local Liberal Party branch, and entered parliament at the 1968 state election, winning his seat from Labor's Eric Heenan. The Minister for Forestry is a position in the Cabinet of Western Australia. The minister is responsible for the Forest Products Commission, an agency of the government of Western Australia, and may hold other portfolios in addition to forestry. The current Minister for Forestry is Dave Kelly of the Labor Party, who holds the position as a member of the McGowan Labor Government. The responsibilities now incorporated in the portfolio were originally held by the Colonial Secretary, and subsequently the Minister for Lands. A separate Minister for Forests was not appointed until the 1917 Lefroy Ministry, with the inaugural minister being Robert Robinson. Minister for Lands is a position in the government of Western Australia, currently held by John Carey of the Labor Party. The position was first created in 1870, under the name Commissioner of Crown Lands, at a time when Western Australia was still a British colony and had not yet achieved responsible government. Exception for a brief period between 2001 and 2003, it has existed in every government since then. The minister is currently responsible for the state government's Land Use Management division comprising part of the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage, which is responsible for the management of crown land in Western Australia. 1980 Western Australian State Election
Elections were held in the state of Western Australia on 23 February 1980 to elect all 55 members to the Legislative Assembly and 16 members to the 32-seat Legislative Council. The Liberal- National Country coalition government, led by Premier Sir Charles Court, won a third term in office against the Labor Party, led by Opposition Leader Ron Davies. The election produced very little in terms of the balance of the parties in Parliament—Labor won Kimberley from the Liberals in the Assembly, and a North Province seat in the Council, but lost two Council seats to the Liberals—one each in North Metropolitan and South-East Metropolitan. However, Labor received a substantial swing overall, increasing majorities in seats it already held, and reducing Liberal majorities in western suburban seats and pushing the key seats of Bunbury and Pilbara into marginal status.
