Ian Josephson
A Justice of the Supreme Court of British Columbia, Ian Bruce Josephson gained national attention overseeing the trial of two persons accused of bombing Air India Flight 182, the largest mass-murder in Canadian history. Josephson articled at the Nelson law firm of Stewart Enderton, and became notable in 1975 for being named a Provincial Court judge at the age of only 29. Nine years later he was named associate chief judge, and in 1988 became chief judge. In 1989 he was appointed to the County Court of Westminster, and in 1990, with the merging of British Columbia's court system, he was renamed as a judge of the province's Supreme Court In 2012, Ripudaman Singh Malik, a former suspect in the Air India case who was found not guilty by Judge Josephson, wanted the B.C. government to pay for $9.2 million that he had to spend to defend himself in the Air India terrorism case. Articling
Articled clerk is a title used in Commonwealth countries for one who is studying to be an accountant or a lawyer. In doing so, they are put under the supervision of someone already in the profession, now usually for two years, but previously three to five years was common. This can be compared as being an intern for a company. Trainees are obligated to sign a contract agreeing to the terms of being an articled clerk. The articled clerk signs a contract, known as "articles of clerkship", committing to a fixed period of employment. ''Wharton's Law Lexicon'' defines an articled clerk as "a pupil of a solicitor, who undertakes, by articles of clerkship, continuing covenants, mutually binding, to instruct him in the principles and practice of the profession". The contract is with a specific partner in the firm and not with the firm as a whole. Gustafsen Lake Standoff
The Gustafsen Lake standoff was a land dispute that led to a confrontation between the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and the Indigenous occupiers (Ts'peten Defenders) in the interior of British Columbia, Canada, at Gustafsen Lake (known as ''Ts'peten'' in the Shuswap language). The standoff began on August 18, 1995, and would last for 31 days, ending on September 17, 1995 when the few remaining occupiers left the site peacefully. The RCMP operation during the standoff would end up being the most costly of its kind to date in modern Canadian history, having involved 400 police officers and support from the Canadian Armed Forces in the form of Operation Wallaby. Air India Flight 182 was an Air India flight operating on the Montreal–London–Delhi–Bombay route. On 23 June 1985, it was operated using Boeing 747-237B registered ''VT-EFO''. It disintegrated in mid-air en route from Montreal to London, at an altitude of over the Atlantic Ocean, as a result of an explosion from a bomb planted by Canadian Sikh terrorists. The remnants of the airliner fell into the ocean approximately off the coast of Ireland, killing all 329 people aboard, including 268 Canadian citizens, 27 British citizens, and 24 Indian citizens. The bombing of Air India Flight 182 is the deadliest aviation incident in the history of Air India and was the world's deadliest act of aviation terrorism until the September 11 attacks in 2001.
