Ian Farlam
Ian Farlam SC is a retired South African judge, who chaired the commission of inquiry into the 2012 Marikana massacre. Early life and education Farlam was born in Cape Town and obtained his LLB degree from the University of Cape Town in 1961. In that year he was also the clerk of Judge Martin Theron.. Career He became a prosecutor and worked at the attorney general's office from 1964 until 1968, first in Grahamstown and then in Cape Town. He joined the Cape Bar in 1968 and was awarded Senior Counsel status at the end of 1981. South African Judges
South is one of the cardinal directions or compass points. The direction is the opposite of north and is perpendicular to both east and west. Orange Free State Provincial Division
The Free State Division of the High Court of South Africa (previously named the Orange Free State Provincial Division and the Free State High Court, and commonly known as the Bloemfontein High Court) is a superior court of law with general jurisdiction over the Free State province of South Africa. Marikana Massacre
The Marikana massacre was the killing of thirty-four miners by the South African Police Service (SAPS) on 16 August 2012 during a six-week wildcat strike at the Lonmin platinum mine at Marikana near Rustenburg in South Africa's North West province. The massacre constituted the most lethal use of force by South African security forces against civilians since the Soweto uprising in 1976 and has been compared to the 1960 Sharpeville massacre. The massacre occurred on the seventh day of an illegal wildcat strike at the mine: although the initial strikers were primarily rock drill operators belonging to the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), the strike action was launched without NUM endorsement.
