Ian Elsby
Ian Christopher Elsby (born 13 September 1960) is an English former footballer who played for Port Vale, Cleveland Cobras, Macclesfield Town and Congleton Town. His uncle is the former footballer Jim Elsby. Career Elsby graduated from the Port Vale youth team to sign as a professional in May 1978. He was immediately sent out to the USA on loan with Jimmy Melia's American Soccer League side Cleveland Cobras, but returned to Vale Park by August of that year. He played five Fourth Division games under Dennis Butler in 1978–79 before becoming a first-team regular under new boss John McGrath from February 1980 to the end of the 1979–80 season. He scored his first goal in the Football League on 9 February 1980, in a 1–1 draw with Huddersfield Town. He fell out of favour the next season though, and was restricted to 23 appearances before being handed a free transfer in May 1981. The Football Association Challenge Cup, more commonly known as the FA Cup, is an annual knockout football competition in men's domestic English football. First played during the 1871–72 season, it is the oldest national football competition in the world. It is organised by and named after The Football Association (The FA). Since 2015, it has been known as The Emirates FA Cup after its headline sponsor. A concurrent women's tournament is also held, the Women's FA Cup. Trevor Brissett
Trevor Anthony Brissett (2 January 1961 – 17 May 2010) was an English footballer. He played in the Football League for Port Vale and Darlington in the early 1980s. He remained involved with football for the rest of his life, playing for Stafford Rangers, Witton Albion, Macclesfield Town, and Newcastle Town, and coaching at Newcastle Town, Congleton Town, Meir KA and the Stoke City Academy. Playing career Brissett was contracted to Stoke City, before joining local rivals Port Vale in May 1980, after being spotted by John McGrath and John Rudge. He made 45 appearances in 1980–81, missing just five Fourth Division games. However, he featured just 15 times in 1981–82, and was given a free transfer in May 1982. Steve Waddington
Steven Waddington (born 5 February 1956) is an English former footballer. His father is former Stoke City manager, Tony Waddington. A midfielder, he made 201 league appearances in an eight-year career in the Football League. He began his career at Stoke City in 1976, before moving on to Walsall three years later. He joined Port Vale in July 1982, before transferring to Chesterfield in July 1983. He moved on to non-League club Macclesfield Town the following year. He played very minor roles in promotion campaigns for both Stoke and Vale, though played a much bigger part in Walsall's promotion out of the Fourth Division in 1979–80. Career Waddington played for Stoke City, playing 13 games under his father in 1976–77. He scored his first senior goal on 6 November 1976, in a 3–1 win over Middlesbrough at the Victoria Ground. Northern Premier League
The Northern Premier League is an English football league that was founded in 1968. It has four divisions: the Premier Division (which stands at level 7 of the English football league system), Division One East, Division One West and Division One Midlands (which stand at level 8). Geographically, the league covers all of Northern England and the northern/central areas of the Midlands, and western parts of East Anglia. Originally a single-division competition, a second division was added in 1987: Division One, and in 2007 a third was added when Division One split into two geographic sections - Division One North and Division One South. In professional association football, a free transfer, also known as a Bosman transfer, involves a professional association football club releasing a player when the player's contract has expired or made available just before the end of the contract. The player can then go on to sign for any club offering a contract to them. How it works The club acquiring the player does not have to pay any compensation for their release due to having nothing left to pay on their contract, hence, the term free transfer. Some individual leagues have restrictions to protect academies.
