''I Was a Parish Priest'' or ''God's War'' (Spanish:''La guerra de Dios'') is a 1953 Spanish drama film directed by Rafael Gil and starring Claude Laydu, Francisco Rabal and José Marco Davó.Bentley p.121 It was awarded the Golden Shell, Gran Premio at the first ever San Sebastián International Film Festival. It was also shown at the 14th Venice International Film Festival, Venice Film Festival where it was awarded the Bronze Lion. It portrays the efforts of a young Priest sent to a poor mining village in the early 1930s. Synopsis A priest receives as his first assignment the parish of a mining town, beset by poverty. Rafael Gil (22 May 1913 – 10 July 1986) was a Spanish film director and screenwriter. His film ''La guerra de Dios'' (1953) won the Bronze Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 1953 and also won best film and best director at the San Sebastián International Film Festival. His film ''La noche del sábado'' (1950) was nominated for the Gold Lion at the 1950 Venice Film Festival and his film ''El beso de Judas'' (1954) was also nominated for the Gold Lion at the 1954 festival in Venice. His film ''Let's Make the Impossible!'' (1958) was nominated for the Golden Berlin Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival. He has won nine prizes of the National Syndicate of Spectacle of Spain. Gil was a prominent director of the Franco era. José Manuel Martín Pérez (24 May 1924 – 12 April 2006) was a Spanish film and television actor, radio broadcaster, and screenwriter. Ricardo Calvo Mínguez (October 22, 1943 – September 26, 2002) was a Spanish chess player, doctor, author, reporter, and chess historian, who was awarded the title of International Master in 1973 and played for Spain at the Chess Olympiads of 1966, 1968, 1972 and 1974. He died in 2002 from esophageal cancer. Early life Calvo spoke fluent Spanish, German, and English.
