Gloria Gaynor ( née Fowles; born September 7, 1943) is an American singer, best known for the disco era hits "I Will Survive" (1978), " Let Me Know (I Have a Right)" (1979), " I Am What I Am" (1983), and her version of "Never Can Say Goodbye" (1974). Early life Gaynor was born Gloria Fowles in Newark, New Jersey, to Daniel Fowles and Queenie Mae Proctor. Her grandmother lived nearby and was involved in her upbringing. "There was always music in our house", Gaynor wrote in her autobiography ''I Will Survive''. She enjoyed listening to the radio, and to records by Nat King Cole and Sarah Vaughan. Her father played the ukulele and guitar and sang professionally in nightclubs with a group called Step 'n' Fetchit. Gloria grew up a tomboy; she had five brothers and one sister. Gene McFadden
Gene McFadden (January 28, 1949 – January 27, 2006) was an American singer, songwriter, and record producer. He is best known as one of the key members of the Philadelphia International record label, and was one-half of the successful team of McFadden & Whitehead with John Whitehead. Biography McFadden met John Whitehead as a teenager and together they founded the Epsilons, a soul music group. The group was discovered by Otis Redding, who acted as their manager. They later toured with Redding until his death in 1967, after which, they signed with Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff’s Philadelphia International record label. McFadden & Whitehead soon gained attention for their songwriting ability when their song " Back Stabbers", recorded by The O'Jays, went to No. 3 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100. John Whitehead (singer)
John Cavadus Whitehead (July 10, 1948 – May 11, 2004) was an American singer and songwriter. He was best known as one of the key members of the Philadelphia International record label, and was one-half of the successful team of McFadden & Whitehead with Gene McFadden. McFadden and Whitehead wrote many hits for Philadelphia International artists such as The O'Jays and Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, and had their own hit with "Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now" in 1979. He was the father of both members of mid 1990s duo the Whitehead Brothers, and received an LL.D. from Bates College. Death On May 11, 2004, John Cavadus Whitehead was fatally shot, possibly in a case of mistaken identity, while fixing a car outside his home in Philadelphia. Failing to produce any hit singles, ''Stories'' didn't fare as well as its predecessors and peaked at #178 on the Billboard 200, ''Billboard'' 200. This album has yet to be reissued on Compact disc, CD. Critical reception ''Billboard (magazine), Billboard's'' reviewer noted with satisfaction that "Gaynor deserts the dictates of disco for an album of classic pop-soul songs". He singled out "Ain't No Bigger Fool" and "Make Me Yours" as fine examples of the Motown sound brought up-to-date, with powerful bass lines, beefy brass and call-and-response backup vocals". ''Gloria Gaynor'' is the tenth studio album by Gloria Gaynor and her only to be released on Atlantic Records after her contract with Polydor Records expired. The lead single release was a cover of The Supremes' " Stop in the Name of Love", followed by the singles "America" and "Tease Me". The album failed to garner much attention in either the U.S. or in Europe. It was re-released on CD by Hot Productions in 1997 with two previously unreleased re-recordings of "I Will Survive", added as track 1 (3:35) and a 5:03 Extended Mix as track 10. The album was reissued on 2014 by BBR Records, and did not include the re-recorded versions of "I Will Survive", although the extended version can be found on countless compilations by Gaynor over the years. Pamela Yvonne Tillis (born July 24, 1957) is an American country music singer, songwriter, record producer, and actress. She is the daughter of country music singer Mel Tillis and ex-wife of songwriter Bob DiPiero.
