I Deal In Crime
''I Deal in Crime'' was an American old-time radio detective drama. It was broadcast on ABC from January 21, 1946, until October 18, 1947, and on Mutual from October 25, 1947 until September 4, 1948. In 1947, the title was changed to ''Ross Dolan, Detective''. Premise Private detective Ross Dolan returned to investigating crimes after serving in the Navy during World War II. A 10-year veteran as a private investigator, he found clients via ads in ''The Chronicle'' and worked for $25 per day, plus expenses. Many of Dolan's cases involved murders, and he often encountered problems with the police as he worked. Dolan narrated the stories, "relating his own reactions to the clues as they occur." Initially, the program was sustaining. In 1946 the Hastings company (a manufacturer of piston rings) began sponsoring the broadcasts. Lurene Tuttle (August 29, 1907 – May 28, 1986) was an American actress and acting coach, who made the transition from vaudeville to radio, and later films and television. Her most enduring impact was as one of network radio's more versatile actresses. Often appearing in 15 shows per week, comedies, dramas, thrillers, soap operas, and crime dramas, she became known as the "First Lady of Radio". Early years Tuttle was born August 29, 1907, at Pleasant Lake, Indiana, into a family with strong ties to entertainment. Her father, Clair Vivien Tuttle (1883–1950), had been a performer in minstrel shows before becoming a station agent for a railroad. Her grandfather, Frank Tuttle, managed an opera house and taught drama. Her mother was Verna Sylvia (Long) Tuttle. She discovered her own knack for acting after moving with her family to Glendale, Arizona. Mitzi Gould (born July 22, 1915) was an American actress. Before her marriage in 1937 she was known as Mitzi Haynes. Early years Gould was born in New York City, and as a child, she learned to speak Hungarian before she learned to speak English. She went on to become fluent in French as well as in English. She graduated from New York University with a bachelor of arts degree and a double major in English and French literature. Unable to take a teaching examination after graduation, she took a part in a production of a musical comedy for the summer. Career Early in her career, Gould acted in plays, worked as a model, and performed with bands. She debuted on radio in ''Dear Columbia''.
