ITV News Channel
The ITV News Channel was a 24-hour television news channel in the United Kingdom which broadcast from 1 August 2000 to 23 December 2005. It was available on Sky, NTL:Telewest, ITV Digital (until 2002), Freeview (latterly only between 6:00 am and 6:00 pm when ITV4 cut its hours to half day in 2005) and analogue cable, presenting national and international news plus regular business, sport, entertainment and weather summaries. Priority was usually given to breaking news stories. There was also an added focus on British stories, drawing on the resources of the ITV network's regional newsrooms. History The channel launched on 1 August 2000 as a joint venture between ITN and NTL as the ITN News Channel. 576i is a standard-definition television, standard-definition digital video mode, originally used for digitizing analog television in most countries of the world where the utility frequency for electric power distribution is 50 Hz. Because of its close association with the legacy color encoding systems, it is often referred to as PAL, PAL/SECAM or SECAM when compared to its 60 Hz (typically, see PAL-M) NTSC-colour-encoded counterpart, 480i. The ''576'' identifies a vertical resolution of 576 lines, and the ''i'' identifies it as an Interlaced video, interlaced resolution. Granada Television
ITV Granada, formerly known as Granada Television, is the ITV franchisee for the North West of England and Isle of Man. From 1956 to 1968 it broadcast to both the north west and Yorkshire but only on weekdays as ABC Weekend Television was its weekend counterpart. Granada's parent company Granada plc later bought several other regional ITV stations and, in 2004, merged with Carlton Communications to form ITV plc. Granada Television was particularly noted by critics for the distinctive northern and "social realism" character of many of its network programmes, as well as the high quality of its drama and documentaries. Kirsty Lang
Kirsty Lang (born July 1962) is a British journalist and broadcaster who works for BBC Radio and Television. Earlier in her career, she was on the staff of ''The Sunday Times'' and ''Channel 4 News'', working as a presenter and reporter. Lang was a visiting professor at Columbia University in New York for several months at the beginning of 2012. She chairs the Board of the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead and since 2014 has been on the board of the British Council. Career Lang was raised in various parts of the world; her family were evacuated from Nigeria at the time of the Biafran war in 1967. Owen Thomas is the "Global Head of Editorial Content" for ING Group. Previously, he was a news presenter on BBC World News and BBC World Service and an anchor on CNN International and Bloomberg Television. Journalism career Thomas worked for many years at ITN, presenting the now defunct ITV News Channel, the networked '' ITV Morning News'' and the regional ITV programme ''London Tonight''. He spent a year presenting the news on the BBC World Service, and anchored their '' World Briefing'' programme. Andrew Harvey (born 3 March 1944) is a British journalist, who over a period of thirty years has presented most of main television news programmes of the BBC and ITN. Career Harvey began his BBC television career in Bristol working in production, before trying his hand as a news reporter in 1975, then moving on to the launch of breakfast television in Britain: Breakfast Time on BBC One. From there he went on to present the One O'Clock, Six O'Clock News and flagship Nine O'Clock News on BBC One. From national news, he moved to become a presenter on South Today, the BBC's regional news service for the Southampton region, as well as having presented on BBC Points West in the Bristol region, and also presented nationally once more, on BBC News. Alison Bell (journalist)
Alison Bell (born 21 September 1966) is an English journalist and radio presenter. Career In the mid-1990s Bell lived in Wellington, New Zealand and was briefly a presenter on local radio station The Breeze. Bell was one of the launch presenters for the ITN News Channel in August 2000, presenting various programmes during the day, most notably the lunchtime slot between 12 noon and 2pm. 2003 saw her move to Sky News, where she presented the Sunrise programme weekday mornings. A year later, she moved to CNN International. She resigned from that position in July 2004, after her arrest outside a restaurant with James Hewitt. She then joined London radio station LBC 97.3, presenting shows in various timeslots, before presenting a regular show on Friday nights until April 2006. John Aleck Suchet ( ; born 29 March 1944) is an English author, television news journalist, and presenter of classical music on Classic FM. Suchet has two brothers, one of whom is the actor Sir David Suchet. Early life Suchet was born in London, the son of Joan Patricia (née Jarché; 1916–1992), an actress, and Jack Suchet, (1908–2001) who emigrated from South Africa to England in 1932, and trained to be a doctor at St Mary's Hospital, London in 1933. Suchet's father was a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist, working with Alexander Fleming on the role of penicillin in treating venereal disease. ''5 News at 5'', also known as ''Channel 5 News'', is the news programme of British broadcaster Channel 5, produced by ITN from its main newsroom on Gray's Inn Road, London. History ''5 News'' was one of the new station's flagship programmes when it launched on 30 March 1997. One of the launch newsreaders was Rob Butler, who became MP for Aylesbury in 2019. It was originally produced by ITN, which at the time also provided the news for Channel 4 and ITV. It was announced on 9 March 2004 that Sky had won the new contract to provide Channel 5 with its news bulletins.
