IOOF Hall (De Beque, Colorado)
The IOOF Hall, which has also been known as Crest Theatre, is a two-story building in De Beque, Colorado that was built in 1900. Its second floor's large lodge room served historically as a meeting hall for the Odd Fellows and corresponding Rebekahs groups. First floor rooms of the building served variously as a theater with stage and orchestra pit for local and travelling shows, a community center, and a dance hall. A small projection booth above the lobby, accessed by a steep stairway, was added for the Crest Theatre to begin operating in 1917. De Beque, Colorado
The Town of De Beque is a statutory town located in Mesa County, Colorado. The population was 493 at the time of the 2020 census. De Beque is a part of the Grand Junction, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town consists of a small grid, including a historic downtown featuring a town hall, a tavern, and several commercial businesses in historic structures. The surrounding streets include houses, several churches, and a school. History The town is located in a region historically occupied by the Ute people. White settlers arrived in the region in 1880. The town is named after Dr. W.A.E. de Beque who explored the area with several companions in 1884 while looking for a suitable location for a ranch. Rebekahs
The Daughters of Rebekah, also known as the Rebekahs and the International Association of Rebekah Assemblies, is an international service-oriented organization and a branch of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. Just like the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, the Rebekahs began as an all-white organization, as was typical at the time, that purports to promote the ethic of reciprocity and charity, and draws inspiration from Judeo-Christian ethics. The Independent Order of Odd Fellows originally limited membership to white men only, as was typical at the time. Thus, the Rebekahs began as the female auxiliary of the IOOF, Initially, only relatives such as wives or daughters of IOOF members were allowed.
