INSANE (software)
INSANE is a proprietary INteractive Streaming ANimation Engine developed at LucasArts, primarily by programmer/game designer Vincent Lee. Using custom video compression technology, it greatly compresses moving images so that high quality full-screen videos can be displayed even in hi-res graphics modes on the PC. An early version was first developed for '' Star Wars: Rebel Assault'', and was followed by a much enhanced version in '' Star Wars: Rebel Assault II: The Hidden Empire'' and then in '' Full Throttle'', '' Outlaws'', and '' The Dig''. Middleware is a type of computer software that provides services to software applications beyond those available from the operating system. It can be described as "software glue". Middleware makes it easier for software developers to implement communication and input/output, so they can focus on the specific purpose of their application. It gained popularity in the 1980s as a solution to the problem of how to link newer applications to older legacy systems, although the term had been in use since 1968. ''Star Wars: Rebel Assault'' is a rail shooter video game developed and published by LucasArts for DOS, Macintosh, Sega CD and 3DO Interactive Multiplayer systems, set in the Star Wars universe. Released in 1993, it is the first CD-ROM-only game to be published by LucasArts. The game's story focuses on a young pilot called Rookie One as they are trained by, and subsequently fights for, the Rebel Alliance in the Galactic Civil War. The game features digitized footage and music from the original movies (although most of the original footage is replaced by CGI rendered sequences), and full speech. Rebel Assault II: The Hidden Empire
''Star Wars: Rebel Assault II: The Hidden Empire'' is a 1995 video game developed by LucasArts. It is the sequel to ''Star Wars: Rebel Assault'', set in the Star Wars expanded universe, ''Star Wars'' expanded universe. It is played as a Shoot 'em up#Rail shooters, rail shooter; the player proceeds down predetermined paths, but has the ability to control aiming, shooting, and dodging. The player character, Rookie One, pilots ships such as a YT-1300 Corellian Transport, a B-wing, and a Y-wing, and encounters new enemy ships, including TIE fighter#Other TIE craft, TIE Interceptors. They uncover, and eventually disable production of, a new TIE variant known as the TIE Phantom, which has the ability to cloak.
