Athletics is a group of sporting events that involves competitive running, jumping, throwing sports, throwing, and walking. 1996 IAAF World Road Relay Championships
The 1996 IAAF World Road Relay Championships was the third edition of the global, international marathon relay competition, organised by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF). The event took place on 13–14 April on the streets of Copenhagen, Denmark with the participation of 282 athletes (174 men and 108 women) from 34 nations. The women's race took place on Saturday 13 April and the men's race took place on Sunday 14 April. Each national team consisted of six athletes, who alternately covered six stages to complete the 42.195 km marathon distance. The first, third and fifth stages were of 5 km, the second and fourth stages were of 10 km, and the final stage covered the remaining 7.195 km. |

David Robert Clarke (born 1 January 1958) is a British former distance runner who competed over distances from the 1500 metres to the marathon. He represented Great Britain over 5000 metres at the 1983 World Championships in Athletics and the 1981 Summer Universiade. He made twelve appearances at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships from 1977 to 1995. Individually, his performance came at the 1983 IAAF World Cross Country Championships, where he placed seventh overall. Jonathan "Jon" Solly (born 28 June 1963) is a male English former long-distance runner. Athletics career Solly won the gold medal for England in the 10,000 metres at the 1986 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, Scotland. He achieved his personal best time of 27:51.76 minutes at Crystal Palace on 20 June 1986. 1986 proved to be his peak as a "litany of injuries that could probably fill a medical text book" prevented Solly from reproducing his best form in the years ahead. Carl Edward Thackery (born 14 October 1962 in Sheffield, England) is a retired British long-distance runner, who competed in the 1980s and 1990s. Athletics career He ran twice for Great Britain in the IAAF World Half Marathon Championships, finishing 16th and winning team silver in 1992 and winning individual and team bronzes in 1993. Abebe Mekonnen (born 16 October 1964) is an Ethiopian long-distance runner. Mekkonen was the winner of the 93rd Boston Marathon in 1989. He also competed for Ethiopia in the 1992 Olympics and 1996 Olympics in the marathon. He did not finish in the 1992 games and finished 81st with a time of 2:29:45 in the 1996 Summer Olympics. Mekonnen has the most sub 2:15 marathons of anyone: 32 in all. When he ran his 28th sub-2:15 marathon he broke the record set by Bill Rodgers. Bekele Debele (born 12 March 1963) is an Ethiopian former long-distance runner who specialised in cross country running. His greatest achievement was winning the gold medal at the 1983 IAAF World Cross Country Championships, becoming only the second African man to do so. During his career he was selected for Ethiopia at every edition of the IAAF World Cross Country Championships from 1982 to 1989. He helped win the junior team title in 1982 and shared in the senior team medals from 1983 to 1989, including a three-year undefeated streak for the Ethiopian senior team from 1983 to 1985. He also competed in the 10,000 metres and represented Ethiopia in that event at the 1983 World Championships in Athletics. Wodajo Bulti (born 11 March 1957) is a retired Ethiopian long-distance runner who specialized in the 5000 metres, 10000 metres and cross-country running. Career Wodajo was one of the most significant Ethiopian middle and long-distance runners in 1980s. In his early years on the track he concentrated more on shorter distances such as 1500 metres because of great depth of Ethiopian talent over longer distances.
