Ferruccio Tagliavini
Ferruccio Tagliavini (; 14 August 191329 January 1995) was an Italian operatic tenor mainly active in the 1940s and 1950s. Tagliavini was hailed as the heir apparent to Tito Schipa and Beniamino Gigli in the lyric-opera repertory due to the exceptional beauty of his voice, but he did not sustain his great early promise across the full span of his career. Career Tagliavini was born in Cavazzoli, Reggio Emilia and studied in Parma with Italo Brancucci and in Florence and with Amedeo Bassi, a well-known dramatic verismo and Wagnerian Italian tenor of the pre-World War I era whose voice (as recorded) could not be more unlike Tagliavini's (see M.Scott, ''The Record of Singing'', 1978). It was also in Florence that he made his professional debut in 1938 as Rodolfo in ''La bohème''. Valentina Cortese
Valentina Cortese (1 January 1923 – 10 July 2019) was an Italian actress. She was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in François Truffaut's ''Day for Night'' (1973). Personal life Cortese was born in Milan to a family from Stresa, Piedmont. In 1940, she met conductor Victor de Sabata, who was 31 years older and married with children. She left high school to follow him to Rome, and there she graduated from the Academy of Dramatic Art. They separated in 1948. Cortese married Richard Basehart, her co-star in ''The House on Telegraph Hill'', in 1951, and had one son with him, the actor Jackie Basehart; they divorced in 1960. She never remarried. Jackie Basehart died in Milan in 2015, predeceasing Cortese. Cortese died on 10 July 2019, aged 96. Irasema Dilián (born Eva Irasema Warschalowska; May 27, 1924 – April 16, 1996) was an actress. Born in Brazil to Polish parents, she began her film career in Italy, and appeared in Italian, Spanish and Mexican films. Biography Irasema Dilián was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to Polish parents. She began her film career in Italy, having appeared in Vittorio de Sica's ''Maddalena, Zero for Conduct''. Over the next few years she worked for de Sica, Riccardo Freda, and Mario Soldati, together with actors like Alida Valli and Rossano Brazzi. Rossano Brazzi (18 September 1916 – 24 December 1994) was an Italian actor. Biography Brazzi was born in Bologna, Italy, the son of Maria Ghedini and Adelmo Brazzi, an employee of the Rizzoli shoe factory. He was named after Rossano Veneto, where his father was stationed during his military service in World War I. Brazzi attended San Marco University in Florence, Italy, where he was raised from the age of four. He was a lawyer before becoming an actor and made his film debut in 1939. Mariella Lotti
Maria Camilla Pianotti (17 November 1919 – 18 December 2004), known by the stage name Mariella Lotti, was an Italian film actress. Lotti made her film debut in 1939, and played leading ladies in a number of Fascist era and post-war films. She was one of many actors employed on the anthology film ''The Ten Commandments'', made following the overthrow of Benito Mussolini. She made her final film ''Carmen'' in 1954. Fosco Giachetti (28 March 1900, in Sesto Fiorentino – 22 December 1974, in Rome) was an Italian actor. Fosco Giachetti was the protagonist of '' Lo squadrone bianco'' (1936), directed by Augusto Genina. He became the leading man in Fascist propaganda films such as ''Tredici uomini e un cannone'' (1936), ''Sentinelle di bronzo'' (1937), ''Scipione l'Africano'', Edgar Neville's Italian ''Carmen fra i rossi'' (1939), ''L'assedio dell'Alcazar'' (1940) and ''Bengasi'' (1942). Giacomo Gentilomo (5 April 1909 – 16 April 2001) was an Italian film director and painter. Biography Born in Trieste, at very young age Gentilomo moved to Rome, where at 21 years old he entered the cinema industry, working as a script survivor and an assistant director. Active between 1933 and 1937 as a film editor, in 1939 he debuted as a director with ''Il Carnevale di Venezia''. In 1945 his film ''O sole mio'' got critical acclaim, but later his career was mainly devoted to genre films, and failed to achieve significant critical interest. Dissatisfied with cinema, in the mid-1960s Gentilomo decided to abandon films and to fulfill his passion for painting.
