Island Arts And Crafts Society
The Victoria Sketch Club is a Canadian arts organization, the oldest Canadian arts group west of Ontario. It was established in 1909 as The Island Arts Club. The 56 charter members included Emily Carr, Samuel Maclure and Josephine Crease. The club's stated purpose was "to bring together artists and those interested in art; to hold public exhibitions of art and craft work; and to stimulate general interest in arts and crafts". It was renamed the Island Arts and Crafts Society in 1912. Most early members were immigrants from Britain and were interested in portraying the local scenery. In 1952, the society was renamed The Sketch Club and subsequently became the Victoria Sketch Club. The club continues to hold an annual exhibition of members' work. In 2009, the Maltwood Art Museum and Gallery presented a retrospective ''Rebels and Realists: 100 Years of the Victoria Sketch Club''. Emily Carr
Emily Carr (or M. Emily Carr as she sometimes signed her work) (December 13, 1871 – March 2, 1945) was a Canadian artist and writer who was inspired by the Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast. One of the painters in Canada to adopt a Modernist and Post-Impressionist style, Carr did not receive widespread recognition for her work, '' The Indian Church'' is now her best known, until she changed her subject matter from Aboriginal themes to landscapes — forest scenes in particular, evoking primeval grandeur. As a writer Carr was one of the earliest chroniclers of life in British Columbia. Samuel Maclure
Samuel Maclure (11 April 1860 – 8 August 1929) was a Canadian architect in British Columbia, Canada, from 1890 to 1920. He was born on 11 April 1860 in Sapperton, New Westminster, British Columbia, to John and Martha Maclure. He studied painting at the Spring Garden Institute in Philadelphia from 1884 to 1885, and he was a self-taught architect. He married Margaret Catherine (Daisy) Simpson, an accomplished pianist and portrait painter, on 10 August 1889. Career In 1889, he formed an architectural partnership in New Westminster in association with Charles H. Clow, and then with Richard P. Sharp. In 1892, Maclure moved to Victoria, British Columbia. Josephine Crease
Josephine Crease (August 7, 1864 – December 24, 1947) was a Canadian artist. Life She was the daughter of Sir Henry Pering Pellew Crease and Lady Sarah Lindley Crease. She was born in New Westminster and moved to Victoria with her family in 1869. She attended art classes at King's College in London with her sister Susan. Crease took sketching trips around Vancouver Island and painted watercolours of local landscapes. She was a founding member of the Island Arts and Crafts Society, serving as its honorary president in 1939, and a member of the Victoria Sketch Club, serving as its president in 1903. She was included in exhibitions by the British Columbia Society of Fine Arts, at the Vancouver Art Gallery, which exhibited her work in 1978, and at the Victoria Fair. Jack Shadbolt
Jack Leonard Shadbolt, (February 4, 1909 November 22, 1998) was a Canadian painter. Early life Born in Shoeburyness, England, Shadbolt came to Canada with his parents in April 1911. He was raised in Victoria, British Columbia. He studied at the Art Students' League in New York City (1948) and in London (1937) and Paris (1938). From 1928 to 1937, he taught in high schools in Duncan, British Columbia and Vancouver, British Columbia. Starting in 1938, he taught and studied with Frederick Varley at the Vancouver School of Art. Ted Harrison
Edward Hardy Harrison LL.D. (August 28, 1926 – January 16, 2015) was an English-Canadian artist who created many paintings of the Yukon. Early life and education Ted Harrison was born in Wingate, County Durham, England, in 1926. He started to paint at the West Hartlepool School of Art in England. Although interrupted by war, Harrison went on to complete his studies, being awarded a National Diploma in Design from the College in 1949. His subsequent earning of a teaching certificate from the University of Durham and a B.Ed from the University of Alberta, led to a teaching career that lasted almost three decades. Ina Uhthoff
Ina D .D. Uhthoff (née Campbell) (1889 – 1971) was a Scots-Canadian painter. A contemporary and friend of Emily Carr, Uhthoff was known for establishing her own art school; the ''Victoria School of Art'', writing columns for the '' Daily Colonist'' newspaper, and exhibiting her own art. Biography Uhthoff was born in 1889 in Kirn, Argyll, Scotland. She grew up in Glasgow, graduating from the Glasgow School of Art in 1912. Katharine Emma Maltwood
Katharine Emma Maltwood (née Sapsworth) was a writer and artist on the esoteric and occult. Throughout her childhood, she was reared to be an artist. Her parents were progressive, and they pushed each of their children equally to achieve their potential. In her formative years of art education, her artistic inclinations drew her into the fashionable Arts and Crafts Movement. Maltwood matriculated at the Slade School of Fine Art, University College, London (1896–97). Here, she studied sculpture. Stella Langdale
Irene Stella Rolph Langdale (1880 – April 14, 1976) was an English and Canadian artist. She was commonly referred to as Stella Langdale. She sketched worked in charcoal but also used oils, watercolour, pastels and etching techniques especially aquatint in her work. She also produced sculptures. Her preferred subject matter was landscapes from North Africa, Italy and France, as well as imaginary images often with musical inspiration. Sarah Lindley Crease
Sarah Lindley Crease (1826–1922) was a Canadian artist. Born in England, as the daughter of botanist John Lindley, Crease studied art with Charles Fox and Sarah Ann Drake. Her early works were botanical illustrations for her father's publications, such as ''The Gardener's Chronicle''. She emigrated to Vancouver Island in 1859, where her husband, Henry Pering Pellew Crease, became a prominent Supreme Court Judge. Besides her seven children, Crease taught Sunday school in the Anglican church and was a volunteer and fundraiser for many local cultural institutions. Thomas Fripp
Thomas William Fripp (March 23, 1864 – May 30, 1931) was an English-born Canadian artist who portrayed in watercolour the mountains of British Columbia and the Rockies. Biography Fripp was the son of George Arthur Fripp, an artist, and Mary Percival. He was born in London, England. His grandfather Nicholas Pocock founded the Royal Watercolour Society. Fripp studied at St John's Wood Art School and then continued his art studies in Italy in 1886. From 1887 to 1890, he learned from his father at the Royal Academy of Arts. Margaret Kitto
Margaret Elizabeth Kitto (July 28, 1873 – August 9, 1925) was an English-born Canadian artist and educator. The daughter of Francis Bowyer Kitto and Lavinia Mary Tilly, she was born in London and came to Victoria with her family in 1891. In 1922, she opened the Deco Art Studio with Lillian Sweeney, also an artist; they produced and sold various arts and crafts. Kitto taught at the Sacred Heart Convent School and the Western Art Studio; she later taught evening classes for the local school board. Her pupils included Edythe Hembroff-Schleicher, who was Emily Carr's friend and biographer.
