Is Vic There
"Is Vic There?" is a song by post-punk band Department S, released by Demon Records on 29 December 1980. It was their first single under the name Department S, after their debut single "I'm Gonna Rough My Girlfriend's Boyfriend Up Tonight" under the name Guns for Hire. It was produced by former Mott the Hoople members Buffin and Overend Watts. The title is a quotation from a Monty Python sketch titled "Phone-In", which closed the comedy troupe's 1973 '' Matching Tie and Handkerchief'' album. It is also a sly in-joke reference to the elusive Vic Goddard of the Subway Sect. Release "Is Vic There?" charted at No. 22 on the UK Singles Chart and, when re-released on RCA Records in March 1981, it made No. 67 on the Hot Dance Club Play chart. Department S (band)
Department S are a British post-punk/ new wave band formed in 1980, who took their name from the 1960s TV series '' Department S''. They are best known for their debut single, "Is Vic There?", which was originally released in December 1980 and reached No. 22 on the UK Singles Chart the following year. Their last album, ''When All Is Said and All Is Done'', was released in 2016. History 1980s Department S evolved from a previous punk/ska combo, Guns for Hire, fronted by Vaughn Toulouse and also featuring former Madness drummer John Hasler. Subway Sect
Subway Sect were one of the first British punk bands. Although their commercial success was limited by the small amount of recorded material they released, they have been credited as highly influential on the Postcard Records scene and the indie pop genre which followed. Career Early days The core of the band was singer-songwriter, Vic Godard, plus assorted soul fans, who congregated around early gigs by the Sex Pistols until Malcolm McLaren suggested they form their own band. Subway Sect were among the performers at the 100 Club Punk Festival on Monday, 21 September 1976 – sharing the bill with Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Clash and the Sex Pistols. David Maurice Clarke (born 19 September 1968) is an English electronic music DJ, producer and radio presenter. BBC radio presenter John Peel named Clarke "The Baron of Techno". Early life Born in Brighton, East Sussex, England, Clarke was educated at Brighton College, but moved out of home at the age of 16 after his parents separated. Since the age of 8, Clarke has been interested in music and technology, and to him, "there was no alternative but to go professional." After a brief period of homelessness, a friend offered him temporary accommodation and Clarke continued to develop his love for music — initially hip hop and post-punk. Thunderthighs (also known as "Thunder Thighs") were a British backing vocal group, who became artists in their own right. Career The female trio, consisting of Karen Friedman, Dari Lalou (American) and Casey Synge, provided the backing vocals to Lou Reed's hit single, " Walk on the Wild Side" (from his 1972 ''Transformer'' album). It was around this vocal arrangement that singer-songwriter Lynsey de Paul wrote their first single, " Central Park Arrest", which reached number 30 in the UK Singles Chart in 1974.
