Ironman (surf Lifesaving)
The sport of Ironman was developed in 1964 in Australia by Valentine Trainor to combine the four main disciplines of surf lifesaving into a single race; swimming, board paddling, ski paddling and running. The sport should not be confused with Ironman triathlon. It is typically run as a single event as a part of a surf life saving carnival, although it can be run as a sport in its own right. Internationally it is sometimes called Oceanman History After the creation of the Surf Lifesaving movement in 1907, members needed a way to stay fit and hone their skills in between patrols. Thus, in 1915, the first NSW Titles were held. These early titles held traditional events such as the boat race, march past, R&R and surf races. Ky Hurst
Ky Hurst (born 11 March 1981) is an Australian swimmer and Ironman (surf lifesaving), ironman. He competed at the 2008 Summer Olympics in the Swimming at the 2008 Summer Olympics – Men's marathon 10 kilometre, 10km marathon swimming event and finished in 11th place, after qualifying by finishing fifth at the 2008 International Swimming Federation, FINA World Open Water Swimming Championship. Hurst was one of the first Australian athletes to gain selection for the 2012 London Olympics by placing fifth at the 2011 World Open Water Swimming Championships. At that time Hurst decided to continue to pursue both swimming and Ironman racing during 2012, the latter he competed in with great success. 1981 World Lifesaving Championships
The 1981 Lifesaving World Championships were conducted between 1–3 May 1981 at Kuta Beach on the island of Bali in Indonesia. They were held under the auspices of World Lifesaving (WLS), one of the two precursor organisations to the International Life Saving Federation (ILS). 15 Ocean and Beach events were held purely for competitors representing their club teams. Dean Mercer
Dean Paul Mercer (24 November 1969 – 28 August 2017) was an Australian sportsman who competed in ironman events. Career Mercer was born in Bulli and raised in Thirroul, both suburbs of Wollongong. Early in his career, Mercer and his brother Darren were coached by their father, John. Mercer became a professional ironman at 15 and competed from 1987 to 2010. He won the Australian open ironman titles in 1989 and 1995, and five New South Wales championships. In 1997 he won the World Oceanman series. He competed in his last Coolangatta Gold aged 40. In 1992, Mercer was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for "service to surf lifesaving", and in 1990 was inducted into the NSW Hall of Champions at Sydney Olympic Park. Australian Surf Life Saving Championships
The Australian Surf Life Saving Championships known as The Aussies is the national Surf lifesaving championships for Australia. It is the largest surf lifesaving event in Australia and the largest event of its kind in the world. It is organised by the Surf Life Saving Australia, and had been held annually since 1915. The first Australian Surf Life Saving Championships were held at Bondi Beach, New South Wales in March 1915. During the 2015 Championships 7,000 surf lifesavers, representing 311 Surf Life Saving Clubs, will be competing in over 380 events in Youth Championships, Masters Championships and Open Championships.
