Ireland At The 2020 Summer Olympics
The team of the Olympic Federation of Ireland, which competed at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, represented athletes from both the Republic of Ireland and those from Northern Ireland who choose it instead of the Great Britain and Northern Ireland team. Originally scheduled to take place from 24 July to 9 August 2020, the Games were postponed to 23 July to 8 August 2021, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was the team's twenty-second appearance at the Summer Olympics, having attended every edition since 1924 (before then the whole of Ireland was represented by the Great Britain and Ireland team) except the 1936 Summer Olympics in Germany. The Olympic Federation of Ireland or OFI ( ga, Cónaidhm Oilimpeach na hÉireann) (called the Irish Olympic Council until 1952 and the Olympic Council of Ireland until 2018) is the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of the island of Ireland. Athletes from Northern Ireland have the option of participating under its auspices or in the Great Britain Olympic Team. Fintan McCarthy
Fintan McCarthy (born 23 November 1996) is an Irish lightweight rower. He is an Irish national champion and a world and Olympic champion. He won the men's lightweight double sculls championship title with Paul O'Donovan at the 2019 World Rowing Championships and at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics where he set a new world's best time for that event. He also won a bronze medal in lightweight single sculls at the 2020 European Rowing Championships. Career McCarthy is from Skibbereen, County Cork. His first experience in rowing was while in primary school, but only started taking the sport seriously when he was 15 after seeing the London Olympics in 2012. He studied at University College Cork and graduated with a degree in physiology. McCarthy won his first national title in rowing with his brother Jake in 2016. The badminton tournaments at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo took place between 24 July and 2 August 2021. A total of 172 athletes (86 male and 86 female players) competed in five events: men's singles, men's doubles, women's singles, women's doubles, and mixed doubles. Athletics at the 2020 Summer Olympics were held during the last ten days of the Games. They were due to be held from 31 July – 9 August 2020, at the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo, Japan. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the games were postponed to 2021, with the track and field events set for 30 July – 8 August. The sport of athletics at these Games was split into three distinct sets of events: track and field events, remaining in Tokyo, and road running events and racewalking events, moved to Sapporo. A total of 48 events were held, one more than in 2016, with the addition of a mixed relay event. Aidan Walsh (born March 28, 1997) is an Irish boxer. Walsh trains at Emerald ABC, Belfast. In 2015, Aidan won gold at light welterweight at the Commonwealth Youth Games. At welterweight, Aidan won silver at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Aidan also competed in the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham where he won Gold alongside his sister Michaela Walsh, who is also a champion amateur boxer. The women's coxless four event at the 2020 Summer Olympics took place from 24 to 28 July 2021 at the Sea Forest Waterway. 40 rowers from 10 nations competed. The women's lightweight boxing event at the 2020 Summer Olympics took place between 27 July and 8 August 2021 at the Ryōgoku Kokugikan. 20 boxers from 20 nations competed.
