The Olympic Federation of Ireland or OFI ( ga, Cónaidhm Oilimpeach na hÉireann) (called the Irish Olympic Council until 1952 and the Olympic Council of Ireland until 2018) is the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of the island of Ireland. Gerry Martina
Gerry Martina (5 February 1928 – 3 April 1990) was a Dublin member of the 1956 and 1960 Irish Olympic wrestling teams, finishing a notable 4th in the Men's Light-Heavyweight Freestyle category in 1956 in Melbourne, Australia. Martina also won the British Senior male Light-Heavyweight Freestyle championship in 1956. Shirley Armstrong
Shirley Armstrong-Duffy (14 August 1930 – 21 December 2018) was an Irish fencer. She competed in the women's individual foil event at the 1960 Summer Olympics for the Republic of Ireland. Biography Armstrong married Irish fencer, Patrick Joseph Duffy who founded The Irish Academy of Arms (Academie d'Armes d'Irlande) in 1952 as well as the highly successful club - Salle Duffy. They helped to build it into a club which dominated fencing in Ireland and became one of the premier clubs in the country. In 1958, they were both heavily involved in the re-establishment of the International Academy of Fencing Masters. Both coached in the fencing clubs at University College Dublin, Royal College of Surgeons and Trinity College Dublin. as well as St Conleth's College, St Killian's School, Wesley College, Sandford Park School, Sutton Park School, St Gerard's School and many other schools in Dublin. Fencing At The 1960 Summer Olympics – Women's Foil
The women's foil was one of eight fencing events on the fencing at the 1960 Summer Olympics programme. It was the eighth appearance of the event. The competition was held from 31 August – 1 September 1960. 56 fencers from 24 nations competed. Competition format The competition used a pool play format, with each fencer facing the other fencers in the pool in a round robin. Bouts were to 4 touches. Barrages were used to break ties necessary for advancement. However, only as much fencing was done as was necessary to determine advancement, so some bouts never occurred if the fencers advancing from the pool could be determined. The men's team épée was one of eight fencing events on the fencing at the 1960 Summer Olympics programme. It was the eleventh appearance of the event. The competition was held on 9 September 1960. 105 fencers from 21 nations competed. Competition format The competition combined pool play with knockout rounds, a change from prior tournaments which used pool play all the way through. The first round consisted of pools, with the 21 teams entered in the competition divided into 7 pools of 3 teams. The top 2 teams in each pool after a round-robin advanced. The 14 teams remaining after the pool play competed in a four-round single-elimination bracket, with a bronze medal match between the semifinal losers. The winners of the first 2 pools received byes in the round of 16. The men's épée was one of eight fencing events on the fencing at the 1960 Summer Olympics programme. It was the thirteenth appearance of the event. The competition was held from 5 to 6 September 1960. 79 fencers from 32 nations competed. Each nation was limited to three fencers. The event was won by Giuseppe Delfino of Italy, the nation's sixth consecutive victory in the men's épée (twice as many all-time as the nation with the next most, France with three). Delfino, who had taken silver in 1956, was the seventh man to win multiple medals in the event. Silver went to Allan Jay of Great Britain and bronze to Bruno Habārovs of the Soviet Union, the first-ever medal in the event for both nations. It was the first time during Italy's gold-medal streak that the nation did not have a second medalist as well. Harry Thuillier (13 September 1922 – 26 April 2011) was an Irish fencer, table tennis international and broadcaster. He was educated at St. Vincent's C.B.S., Glasnevin.
