The All-Ireland Rugby League Championship (now the McGettigans All-Ireland League for sponsorship reasons) was first played for in 1997 under the title All-Ireland Challenge Cup. Since then it has also been known as the All-Ireland League, Elite League and the All-Ireland Championship. History The first domestic rugby league club in Ireland were the Dublin Blues Rugby League who were founded in 1989 by ''Brian Corrigan'' a club that was primarily used by union players to stay fit during the off season, playing against touring British amateur teams. Following the formation of the Ireland national side in 1995 a league competition was mooted to aid further development. So in 1997 the first Rugby League tournament began in Ireland. Under the title ''All-Ireland Challenge Cup'' eight clubs, Belfast Buccaneers, Tallaght Tigers, Churchtown Warriors, East Coast Panthers from Bray, Bangor Vikings, Dublin Blues, Northside Saints and Cork Bulls chased the first ever title. Rugby league is a team sport played in Ireland on an all-Ireland basis. History In May 1934 Wigan beat Warrington 32–19 in an exhibition match in Dublin. Twenty years later, in May 1954, Warrington were again defeated by Halifax in both Belfast (34–15) and Dublin (23–11). The first rugby league club side to actually play in Ireland, Dublin Blues, were not formed until 1989. They consisted mostly of rugby union players who wanted to test themselves in the other code. The Blues competed against touring teams from Britain scoring victories over British amateur opposition. In early 1995 the Rugby Football League development arm financed the position of a Development Officer for Ireland, providing a boost to the development of the game. Carlow Crusaders
The Carlow Crusaders were a rugby league team based in Carlow, Ireland. They played in the Irish Elite League. They played home games at Oak Park, Carlow. The Crusaders were forced to play most of their games in Cill Dara RFC, Kildare as Oak Park is owned & used by Carlow RFC. The Carlow Crusaders were embroiled in controversy when they opted to pull out of the 2011 All Ireland Final against the Treaty City Titans. They have yet to explain publicly their reasons for the action but has since been found guilty of bringing the game into disrepute by an independent panel. This decision has left many wondering if Carlow will take part in any further rugby league competitions. They are currently in the process of appealing the charge. Navan ( ; , meaning "the Cave") is the county town of County Meath, Republic of Ireland, Ireland. In 2016, it had a population of 30,173, making it the List of urban areas in the Republic of Ireland by population, tenth largest settlement in Republic of Ireland, Ireland.
