Ireland's Greatest Sporting Moment
''Ireland's greatest sporting moment'' was a series of five programmes that aired in 2017 to find Ireland's best moment of sport in the television era. The programmes were presented by Evanne Ní Chuilinn and Des Cahill with the series starting on RTÉ2 on 9 November 2017. Four moments were voted for over the first four weeks between 1962 and 2012 with each week's winner progressing to the grand final. The overall winner was revealed in the final programme which aired on 7 December 2017. The winning moment was Republic of Ireland national football team, Ireland's penalty shootout win over Romania national football team, Romania at the 1990 FIFA World Cup. Evanne Ní Chuilinn
Evanne Ní Chuilinn (born 5 September 1981) is an Irish sports journalist and television presenter. She currently works as a sports news presenter on '' RTÉ News: Six One''. Career Ní Chuilinn began her career as a sub-editor with RTÉ Sport in 2004 where she worked behind the scenes on various sports programmes. She progressed onto RTÉ Radio 1 and RTÉ 2fm where she delivered the hourly sports bulletins, as well as co-presenting various live Gaelic games broadcasts. A move to television in 2006 saw Ní Chuilinn work as a reporter on minority sports programme, ''OB Sport''. She became the sideline reporter for ''The Sunday Game'' in 2007. In 2008 Ní Chuilinn started working for RTÉ News, initially as a sports reporter, and shortly afterwards as a sports news presenter on '' RTÉ News: Six One''. Des Cahill
Desmond Cahill (born 10 March 1959) is an Irish sports presenter and commentator with national broadcaster Raidió Teilifís Éireann. Cahill presents RTÉ television's GAA programme '' The Sunday Game'' and RTÉ's flagship weekend sports radio programme '' Saturday Sport'' as well as ''Up for the Match'' which previews the All-Ireland Gaelic Football and Hurling final matches. He is the regular weekday morning sports presenter on ''Morning Ireland'' and ''Today with Sean O'Rourke''. Cahill also presents ''Des's Island Discs'' on RTÉ Radio 1, which discusses various celebrities' favourite choices of music. Cahill previously presented a daily radio programme called ''Drivetime Sport'' on RTÉ Radio 1. Cahill emerged as a hugely popular figure on the first series of ''Dancing with the Stars'' in 2017. RTÉ2
RTÉ2 is an Irish free-to-air television channel operated by public service broadcaster RTÉ. It was launched in 1978 as the Republic of Ireland's second television channel. History In the 1970s, the Irish government considered three options for the introduction of a second television service: the re-transmission of BBC1 Northern Ireland; authorization of an independent commercial service; or charging RTÉ with the establishment of a second national channel. It was the last of these that was finally chosen. The channel—only the second in the Republic—began transmissions at 20:00 on 2 November 1978, opening with a broadcast of a gala ceremony from Cork Opera House. Owing to a technical error, audio from BBC2 was played during the countdown instead of the proper soundtrack. Romania National Football Team
The Romania national football team ( ro, Echipa națională de fotbal a României) represents Romania in international men's football competition and is administered by the Romanian Football Federation ( ro, Federația Română de Fotbal), also known as FRF. 1990 FIFA World Cup
The 1990 FIFA World Cup was the 14th FIFA World Cup, a quadrennial football tournament for men's senior national teams. It was held from 8 June to 8 July 1990 in Italy, the second country to host the event for a second time (the first being Mexico in 1986). Teams representing 116 national football associations entered and qualification began in April 1988. 22 teams qualified from this process, along with host nation Italy and defending champions Argentina. The tournament was won by West Germany, for the third time. They beat Argentina 1–0 at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, a rematch of the previous final four years earlier. Raymond James Houghton (born 9 January 1962) is a former professional footballer and current sports analyst and commentator with RTÉ Sport. As a player, he was a midfielder, notably playing for Liverpool where he won two First Division titles and a two FA Cups before switching to Aston Villa ahead of the inaugural Premier League season. He also briefly played top flight football for both West Ham United and Crystal Palace with spells in the Football League for Fulham, Oxford United and Reading, before retiring with non-league Stevenage Borough. Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Houghton played international football for the Republic of Ireland, for which he qualified through his Irish father.
