Invisible Battalion
Invisible Battalion () is a Ukrainian advocacy campaign, a sociological research group, and a civil rights project for gender equality in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Activities Invisible Battalion was launched in 2015 as a sociological survey coordinated by Maria Berlinska and written by Tamara Martsenyuk, Anna Kvit and Ganna Grytsenko, National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy sociologists, on women's participation in the War in Donbass in Eastern Ukraine. The survey revealed a number of problems: Ukrainian legislation didn’t allow women to be assigned to combat positions, so they were enlisted as cooks, seamstresses, cleaners, accountants etc. while taking part in military combat operations as snipers, grenade launcher operators, reconnaissance soldiers, artillerists etc. This was done on semi-legal grounds. Yuliia "Taira" Paievska ( uk, Юлія Паєвська; sometimes written as "Yulia Paevska") is a Ukrainian designer and athlete who founded the volunteer ambulance corps "Taira's Angels" during the Russo-Ukrainian War. She was captured and imprisoned by Russian soldiers on March 16, 2022 and released on June 17, 2022. She became a symbol of bravery and sacrifice according to the ''New York Times''. Recent history of changes in women's roles includes having women in the military in many countries. Although most countries in the world permit the participation of women in the military, in one form or another, in 2018, only two countries conscripted women and men on the same formal conditions: Norway and Sweden.
