Into The Open Exhibition
''Into the Open'', subtitled "New Paintings, Prints and Sculptures by Contemporary Black Artists", was an exhibition of art by black artists displayed at various venues in the United Kingdom in 1984. This exhibition was the first major survey by a municipal gallery of contemporary work by black artists in Britain, and is considered one of the landmark exhibitions of the 1980s. It was curated, at the invitation of Sheffield City Arts Department, by two people closely involved with black artists in Britain: Pogus Caesar and Lubaina Himid. Their stated aim was to give an indication of the range and richness of art made by contemporary wikt:Afro-Caribbean, Afro Caribbean artists. Veronica Ryan
Veronica Maudlyn Ryan (born 1956 in Plymouth, Montserrat) is a Montserrat-born British sculptor. She moved to London with her parents when she was an infant and now lives between New York and Bristol. In December 2022, Ryan won the Turner Prize for her 'really poetic' work. Keith Piper (born 1960) is a British artist, curator, critic and academic. He was a founder member of the groundbreaking BLK Art Group, an association of black British art students, mostly based in the West Midlands region of the UK. Early life and education Piper was born in Malta – a British colony at the time – to a working-class family of African-Caribbean heritage: his father, originally from Antigua, had gone to England in the 1950s, settled in Birmingham in the West Midlands, and been posted on Malta's military base just before Piper's birth. Pitika Ntuli
Pitika Ntuli (born 1942) is a South African sculptor, poet, writer, and academic who spent 32 years of his life in exile in Swaziland and the UK. Biography Pitika Ntuli was born in Springs, Gauteng, South Africa, and grew up in Witbank in Mpumalanga. He became active in the struggle against the apartheid government, as a result of which he was exiled. From 1963, he lived in Swaziland, where he was eventually arrested and detained as a political prisoner, spending a year in solitary isolation in a death row prison cell in Swaziland until international pressure on the South African and Swaziland authorities secured his release in 1978 to the UK. Niati specializes in mixed media installations that criticize Western representations and objectification of north African and Middle Eastern women.
