Intibucá Department
Intibucá () is one of the 18 departments in the Republic of Honduras. Intibucá covers a total surface area of . Its capital is the city of La Esperanza, in the municipality of La Esperanza. History The department of Intibucá was created on April 16, 1883 upon recommendation of the Governor of the department of Gracias (now called Lempira), Jose Maria Cacho in 1869. He advised that the vast size of Gracias made it difficult to govern and that it would be desirable to divide it into more than one department. On March 7, 1883 Decree No. 10 was issued, which called for the creation of a new department to be named Intibucá in April of that year. The town of La Esperanza was designated to be the capital of the new department. To create the new department, territory from both the departments of Gracias and La Paz were reassigned. Honduras is divided into 18 departments ( Spanish: ''departamentos''). Each department is headed by a governor, who is appointed by the President of Honduras. Río Gualcarque
The Gualcarque River ( es, Río Gualcarque) is a river in Intibucá, western Honduras. It is sacred to the indigenous Lenca, who depend on the river for their subsistence. It is the site of the proposed Agua Zarca hydroelectric dam, a joint Honduran-Chinese project. Since 2006, Sinohydro, the World Bank's International Finance Corporation (IFC), and Honduran company Desarrollos Energéticos (DESA) have made preparations for four hydroelectric dams without consulting the Lenca, including the Agua Zarca dam. Construction began in 2012, and in 2013 river access was blocked, after which the Lenca started to protest. They have been met with violence, detention and torture. Intibucá () is a city, with a population of 28,220 (2023 calculation), and a municipality in the department of Intibucá, Honduras. The urban area of Intibucá is an important transit and commercial site in the South-West region of Honduras. Concepción () is a municipality in the Honduran department of Intibucá. History According to a report by the governor of the region Alonso de Contreras Guevara in 1582, the area was originally known as Guaraxambala, which signified the "Great Jaguar River." The original inhabitants of the municipio were the indigenous Lenca group. The first Spanish settled in ejidos established by the Lords Lucas, Manuel, Cristóbal, and Marcos Díaz, in the jurisdiction of Santiago.
