Aswan International Women’s Film Festival
Aswan International Women's Film Festival (AIWFF) was founded in 2017 by Egyptian screenwriter Mohamed Abdel Khalek. It is the first festival geared towards teaching filmmaking to youth in the Aswan region. History The festival, established in 2017 by Mohamed Abdel Khalek, has quickly become one of Egypt's premier film events. It is conducted in coordination between the Egyptian ministries of culture and tourism, under the supervision of the National Council for Women. The festival attracts an international audience of celebrities and politicians from the Arab world and beyond, such as Yosra El Lozy, Madeleine Tabar, Randa El Behery, Danny Glover, Barbara Bouchet and others. The festival is dedicated to Algerian fighter Jamila Bouhaird, who attended a tribute in her honor at the 2nd edition in 2018. The Cairo International Women's Film Festival ( ar, مهرجان القاهرة الدولي لسينما المرأة) or CIWFF is an independent initiative dedicated to introducing films directed by women from around the world — not necessarily addressing women's issues—to explore the perspectives of female filmmakers. The founder and directors of the festival emphasize its goal to be serving as a platform through which films created by women are introduced to the audience as well as 'a meeting point for the audience and filmmakers'. The International Women's Film Festival (IWFF) was a one-off film festival focusing on women's issues and films made by women, run in several capital cities of Australia in 1975. Background During the early 1970s, there was a growing feminist movement in Australia, and women's cinema gained prominence. The role of women's films was discussed at the Women's Liberation Conference in Melbourne in 1970. Groups such as the Sydney Women's Film Group (SWFG) and Reel Women in Melbourne were established. A number of filmmakers, including Jeni Thornley, Sarah Gibson, Susan Lambert, Martha Ansara, Margot Nash, and Megan McMurchy collaborated and explored ideas related to women by creating stories in film. The International Women's Film Festival of Salé (Arabic: المهرجان الدولي لفيلم المرأة بسلا) or FIFFS, is a film festival held in Salé, Morocco. Organized by the Bouregreg Association under the patronage of King Mohammed VI with the aim of promoting women's cinema and highlighting women in cinema, the festival was created in 2004 and was followed by a second edition in 2006. Mumbai Women's International Film Festival (MWIFF) is an annual film festival in Mumbai, India featuring films made by women directors and women technicians, and is one of the significant film festivals in Asia.
