Bangladesh has experienced terrorism in the past conducted by a number of different organizations. In the past, both ISIL and other terrorist organizations had claimed to be active in the country however, the Bangladeshi government believes that they mainly operated through local affiliates, before being neutralised by security forces. History The first Bangladeshi Islamist factions emerged in 1989, when a network of 30 different factions was established and expanded in the following years. The main goal of most Islamist groups in Bangladesh is to create a separate Islamic state, or to govern Bangladesh according to Sharia law. Islamist groups have conducted operations against the ruling party's corruptions in the country. Islamic groups are alleged to be terrorists for political interests. Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh
Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen ("Assembly of Mujahideen--Bangladesh", abbreviated: JMB; bn, জামাত-উল-মুজাহিদীন বাংলাদেশ) is a terrorist organisation operating in Bangladesh. It is listed as a terror group by Bangladesh, India, Malaysia and the United Kingdom. It was founded in April 1998 in Palampur in Dhaka Division by Abdur Rahman and gained public prominence in 2001 when bombs and documents detailing the activities of the organisation were discovered in Parbatipur in Dinajpur District, Bangladesh, Dinajpur district. The organisation was officially declared a terrorist organisation and banned by the government of Bangladesh in February 2005 after attacks on NGOs. 2001 Ramna Batamul Bombings
The Ramna Batamul bombing was a series of bomb attacks on 14 April 2001 at a cultural programme of the Pahela Baishakh celebrations arranged by Chaayanot, the leading cultural organization of Bangladesh. Ten people, including Shujan, a Harkat-ul-Jihad al-Islami militant, died and many more people were wounded. The Islamic fundamentalist group Harkat-ul-Jihad al-Islami later confessed their involvement in the attack. Attacks Pohela Boishakh or Bengali New Year is the first day of the Bengali calendar. It is celebrated on 14 April in Bangladesh and 15 April in the Indian states of West Bengal as well as Tripura by the Bengali people and by minor Bengali communities in other Indian states, including Assam, Jharkhand and Odisha. 2004 Shah Jalal Bombing
2004 Shah Jalal bombing was a terrorist grenade attack on the British High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Anwar Choudhury. The High Commissioner was injured in the attack and two bystanders were killed. The attack was carried out by Harkat-ul-Jihad al-Islami. Background The Shah Jalal Shrine is a 700 year old Sufi site located in Sylhet, Bangladesh. Anwar Choudhury, the British high Commissioner went to visit Sylhet which was his ancestral home. He is a Bangladeshi born British Citizen. He visited the shrine on 21 May 2004. He offer prayers at the Shrine and was greeting the people who had come to see him. The shrine was bombed in January of the 2004 which resulted in the death of 5 people. 2003 Tangail Shrine Bombing
2003 Tangail shrine bombing was a bomb attack on 17 January 2003 at the Failya Paglar Mela in Tangail, Bangladesh that resulted in the death of 7 people. Attacks The Failya Paglar Mela is the largest fair of Greater Mymensingh area. The fair is held in the remote Dariapur village every year. On 17 January 2003, two bombs exploded within minutes of each other. The three day fair attracts 10 thousand attendees. Hundreds were present in the fair including a Bangladesh Police security team. The explosion killed 7 people. Reactions Haris Chowdhury, the political secretary to Khaleda Zia, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, blamed the opposition parties for the blast. Some locals blamed it on land disputes over the shrine. 2002 Satkhira Bombing
2002 Satkhira bombing was a double bomb attack on 28 September 2002 of Roxy cinema hall and a circus tent in Satkhira District, Bangladesh that killed 3 people and injured 100 others. Attacks Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh, a Bangladeshi Islamist terrorist organization, carried out attacks on the early 2000s in public places in Bangladesh. A bomb was placed in a Roxy cinema hall and another inside a circus tent in Satkhira District on 28 September 2002. Three people died in the explosion and 100 others were injured. The first bomb went off in the cinema hall and minutes later the bomb in the circus went off. Time bombs were used in the attacks. The Mymensingh cinema bombings were a coordinated bombing of four movie theaters that caused in the deaths of 27 people and injured over 200 others in Mymensingh, Bangladesh on 6 December 2002. The bombing was carried out by Jama’atul Mujahedeen Bangladesh. Background The attack happened two months after a circus and cinema were bombed in Satkhira, Bangladesh. The attacks took place while the anti-crime Operation Clean Heart was ongoing. Soldiers from the operation were involved in the rescue and first-aid efforts. Death Of Gopal Krishna Muhuri
Gopal Krishna Muhuri was the principal of Nazirhat College in Chittagong, Bangladesh, who was murdered in his home. '' The Daily Star'' described the case as "sensational". Background The Four Party Alliance led by Bangladesh Nationalist Party and Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh came to power five weeks before the incident. Widespread violation of the rights of minorities and attacks on them took place within a month of the government coming to power. Incident Gopal Krishana Muhuri was the principle of Nazirhat College in Chittagong city, a Hindu, and a former member of Mukti Bahini. He had banned Islami Chattra shibir in his college. Sunamganj ( bn, সুনামগঞ্জ) is a district located in north-eastern Bangladesh within the Sylhet Division. History In the ancient period, Sunamganj was part of the Laur Kingdom.
