Badminton
Badminton is a racquet sport played using racquets to hit a shuttlecock across a net. Although it may be played with larger teams, the most common forms of the game are "singles" (with one player per side) and "doubles" (with two players per side). Badminton is often played as a casual outdoor activity in a yard or on a beach; formal games are played on a rectangular indoor court. Points are scored by striking the shuttlecock with the racquet and landing it within the opposing side's half of the court. Each side may only strike the shuttlecock once before it passes over the net. Utami Dewi Kinard (born 16 June 1951) is a former world-class badminton player who was considered Indonesia's #1 women's singles player in the 1970s, and became the United States' #1 player in 1981, after marrying former 6 time U.S. men's singles champion, Chris Kinard. The Singapore Open is a badminton event that has been held in Singapore annually since 1929. Badminton World Federation categorized Singapore Open as one of the seven BWF World Tour Super 500 events in the BWF events structure since 2018. In 2023, the tournament will be upgraded to a Super 750 event. In 1929, the Singapore Badminton Association (SBA) was established to promote the sport and organise competitions. Its first official annual open championships was held in that same year with the best players chosen to represent Singapore in the regional tournaments. In 1957, it became an open invitation championships and was held annually until 1973. Christian Hadinata (, born 11 December 1949) is a former Chinese Indonesian badminton player. Uber Cup
The Uber Cup, sometimes called the World Women's Team Championships, is a major international badminton competition contested by women's national badminton teams. First held in 1956–1957 and contested at three year intervals, it has been contested every two years since 1984 when its scheduled times and venues were merged with those of Thomas Cup, the world men's team championship. In 2007, the Badminton World Federation decided to have Thomas and Uber Cup finals separated again but the proposal was ultimately abandoned. The Uber Cup is named after a former British women's badminton player, Betty Uber, who in 1950 had the idea of hosting a women's event similar to the men's. She also made the draw for the 1956–1957 inaugural tournament, which took place at Lytham St. Annes in Lancashire, England. Retno Kustijah
Retno Kustijah (born 19 June 1942; as Retno Koestijah) is a former badminton player from Indonesia who competed internationally from the early 1960s to the early 1970s. Career Though she played singles in high level events, Kustijah's greatest success came in women's doubles with regular partner Minarni. They were the first of only two Indonesian teams to win women's doubles at the prestigious All England Championships (1968). Their titles together included the quadrennial Asian Games (1962, 1966), and the Malaysia (1966, 1967), Singapore (1967), New Zealand (1968), Canadian (1969), and U.S. (1969) Opens.
