The Institute for Transport Studies (ITS) is a school within the Environment Faculty of the University of Leeds in the UK. The institute is one of the leading centres for teaching and research in transport in the United Kingdom, and attracts a number of students from outside the UK for its Masters and PhD programmes. The Institute The University of Leeds first offered a Transport Planning & Engineering Masters programme in 1965, and this evolved by 1972 into a fully fledged Institute within the university. The institute is based on University Road, within the main University of Leeds campus, housing approximately 90 academic/research staff. ITS received royal recognition in 2009 by winning a prestigious Queen's Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education - the prize was awarded for "sustained excellence - 40 years' impact in transport research and teaching." The Queen's Anniversary Prizes for Higher and Further Education are a biennially awarded series of prizes awarded to universities and colleges in the further and higher education sectors within the United Kingdom. Intelligent Speed Adaptation
Intelligent speed assistance (ISA), or intelligent speed adaptation, also known as ''alerting'', and ''intelligent authority'', is any system that ensures that vehicle speed does not exceed a safe or legally enforced speed. In case of potential speeding, the driver can be alerted or the speed reduced automatically. Intelligent speed assistance uses information about the road to determine local speed limits. Information can be obtained from knowledge of the vehicle position, taking into account speed limits known for the position, and by interpreting road features such as signs. ISA systems are designed to detect and alert a driver when a vehicle has entered a new speed zone, or when different speed limits are in force according to time of day and conditions. Michèle Dix
Michèle Dix CBE (born 5 February 1955) is a British civil engineer. She is the managing director of Crossrail 2 and had previously been the director of planning for Transport for London. In 2016, Dix was named as one of the Top 50 Influential Women in Engineering. Early life As Michèle Holland, she attended Cleethorpes Girls' Grammar School. Dix gained a degree in civil engineering from the University of Leeds before studying for a Doctor of Philosophy degree in transport and land use planning at the university's Institute for Transport Studies which she was awarded in 1982. Career She worked for the Greater London Council for six years as a traffic planner developing traffic policies and planning new road schemes.
