Institute For Public Relations
The Institute for Public Relations (IPR) is a United States-based, non-profit organization that organizes and sponsors research on public relations. The IPR traces its origins to the 1956 establishment of the Foundations for Public Relations Research and Education, a program of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA). Pendleton Dudley was inaugural chair of the early group which became an independent organization, adopting the name "institute", in 1989. In 2016, the PRSA announced a three-year program of partnership with the IPR to "examine gaps in expectations and skills for new professionals, while also informing the industry at large on how to support its up-and-coming talent base". Public relations (PR) is the practice of managing and disseminating information from an individual or an organization (such as a business, government agency, or a nonprofit organization) to the public in order to influence their perception. Public relations and publicity differ in that PR is controlled internally, whereas publicity is not controlled and contributed by external parties. Public relations may include an organization or individual gaining exposure to their audiences using topics of public interest and news items that do not require direct payment. The exposure mostly is media-based. This differentiates it from advertising as a form of marketing communications. Public relations aims to create or obtain coverage for clients for free, also known as earned media, rather than paying for marketing or advertising also known as paid media. PRWeek
''PRWeek'' is a trade magazine for the public relations industry. The original UK edition was the brainchild of the late Geoffrey Lace who at the time worked for Haymarket. After failing to interest Haymarket in his idea he left to launch it on his own circa 1981. Peter Gummer (now Lord Chadlington) had founded Shandwick a few years earlier in 1974 aged 31. Lace persuaded Shandwick, Dewe Rogerson and a few others to invest into PR Week. PRWeek ran on a shoe string right up until the point it was sold it back to Haymarket, his former employers, for a very large sum circa 1988. There is also a US edition, which launched in 1998, as well as a German edition. The Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) is a nonprofit trade association for public relations professionals. It was founded in 1947 by combining the American Council on Public Relations and the National Association of Public Relations Councils.
