Institució de les Lletres Catalanes (Institute of Catalan Letters) is a Spanish organization based in Barcelona. An entity of the Government of Catalonia, it was founded in 1937 by intellectuals who were loyal to the Republic during the Spanish Civil War. Its immediate predecessor was the Grup Sindical d'Escriptors Catalans (Association of Catalan Writers Group; 1936). Second Spanish Republic
The Spanish Republic (), commonly known as the Second Spanish Republic (), was the form of government in Spain from 1931 to 1939. The Republic was proclaimed on 14 April 1931, after the deposition of Alfonso XIII, King Alfonso XIII, and was dissolved on 1 April 1939 after surrendering in the Spanish Civil War to the Nationalist faction (Spanish Civil War), Nationalists led by General Francisco Franco. After the proclamation of the Republic, Provisional Government of the Second Spanish Republic, a provisional government was established until December 1931, at which time the Spanish Constitution of 1931, 1931 Constitution was approved. Joaquim Ruyra
Joaquim Ruyra i Oms (Catalan pronunciation: ’uəˈkim ruˈi.ɾə 27 September 1858 – 15 May 1939) was a Catalan short-story writer, poet and translator, considered a key figure in modern Catalan literature and one of the great narrators of the 20th century. Besides his literary work, he was also aware of linguistics and participed in the First International Congress of Catalan Language (1906). In 1918, he entered the Philological Section of the Institut d'Estudis Catalans, the academic institution responsible for standardizing the Catalan language, where he collaborated with Pompeu Fabra and others in the making of a unified linguistic system. Life Descending from rural owners and lawyers, he studied law in the University of Barcelona between 1875 and 1881, but never practised to dedicate himself completely to literature. Josep Maria Benet i Jornet (; 20 June 1940 – 6 April 2020), also known as "Papitu", was one of the most renowned Catalan playwrights, considered one of the main renewers of Catalan theater. Biography He was born in a tiny Barcelona apartment in Ronda de Sant Antoni on June 20, 1940, from parents Concepció Jornet and Pere Benet. Growing up, his love for playwriting emerged from reading comic book strips, in which he made up his own dialogues; and he also learned from popular readings and the world of radiophonic serials. Maria Antònia Oliver Cabrer (4 December 1946 – 10 February 2022) was a Spanish writer. Her work has been translated into German, English, Spanish, Galician, French, Portuguese, and Russian. She was honored with the Premi d'Honor de les Lletres Catalanes in 2016. Life Born in Manacor, Balearic Islands, Oliver was a resident of Barcelona from 1969. Oliver was known for her novels and short stories, and was also a Castilian and Catalan language translator. In the 1980s, Oliver joined a number of other Catalan-language writers to form the Ofèlia Dracs collective, looking to bring attention to, and broaden the output of deepening Catalan literature. Oliver's first work was published in 1970. While most of her work has been for adult readers, some is aimed at children and youth. Gabriel Alomar (; 1873–1941) was a poet, essayist, educator and diplomat of the early twentieth century in Spain, closely related to the Catalan art movement Modernisme. He was an active leftist Libertarianism, libertarian, chiefly in Barcelona and the other Catalan language, Catalan-speaking regions, from the first years of the 20th century until his death from pneumonia in exile.
