India At The 2021 Summer Deaflympics
India is currently competing in the 2021 Summer Deaflympics which is held in Caxias do Sul, Brazil. India sent a delegation consisting of 65 participants in 11 sporting disciplines such as shooting, badminton, athletics, golf, judo, karate, table tennis, tennis, taekwondo, wrestling for the event, which is also the largest ever delegation sent by India in a single Summer Deaflympic event. This was the 14th time that India had participated at the Summer Deaflympics since making its Deaflympic debut in 1965. The delegation included Rohit Bhaker, who competed in his 7th Deaflympic event as the most experienced competitor for India at the multi-sport event. Virender Singh (wrestler, Born 1986)
Virender Singh Yadav (not to be confused with Virender Sehwag) (born 1 April 1986) is an Indian freestyle wrestler. Competing in the 74 kg weight division, he has won 3 Deaflympics Gold Medals and a bronze medal in 4 appearances. He won gold medals at 2005 Summer Deaflympics (Melbourne, Australia), 2013 Summer Deaflympics (Sofia, Bulgaria) and 2017 Summer Deaflympics (Samsun, Turkey). In addition to that, he also won a bronze at 2009 Summer Deaflympics (Taipei, Chinese Taipei). Virender also won the world title at the world championship and has gold, silver and bronze apiece at the three World Deaf Wrestling Championships that he has been to. Virender won a gold at 2016 World Deaf Wrestling Championship (Tehran, Iran), a silver at 2008 World Deaf Wrestling Championship (Yerevan, Armenia) and a bronze at the 2012 World Deaf Wrestling Championship (Sofia, Bulgaria). Jafreen Shaik
Shaik Jafreen (born 7 September 1997) is a deaf Indian tennis player. She represented India at the Deaflympics in 2013 and 2017. She claimed a bronze medal in the mixed doubles at the 2017 Summer Deaflympics partnering with Prithvi Sekhar. Career Jafreen started playing tennis when she was just eight years old. She went on to become a formidable tennis player despite being deaf, after being noticed by India's best female tennis player, Sania Mirza, and gaining assistance from her, receiving training at the Sania Mirza Tennis Academy which is located in Hyderabad. Prithvi Sekhar (born 3 October 1993) is an Indian male deaf tennis player. He represented India at the Deaflympics in 2013 and 2017. He won a bronze medal in the mixed doubles at the 2017 Summer Deaflympics partnering with Jafreen Shaik. He is also currently employed in the Integrated Coach Factory in Chennai. Biography Prithvi started playing tennis from 2002 when he was just eight years old. Abhinav Deshwal (born 2007) is an Indian deaf sports shooter. He made his Deaflympic debut at the age of 15 representing India at the 2021 Summer Deaflympics (held in May 2022).
